The Association of Research Libraries has published a Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries. Section 108 of copyright law is an exception that allows libraries to reproduce certain copyrighted materials without permission under certain conditions.

This paper provides a brief overview of the current state of copyright law in the United States, focusing on the negative impacts of these policies on libraries and patrons. The article discusses four challenges current copyright law presents to libraries and the public in general, highlighting three concrete ways intellectual property law interferes with digital library services and systems. Finally, the author suggests that a greater emphasis on copyright literacy and a commitment among the library community to advocate for fairer policies is vital to correcting the imbalance between the interests of the public and those of copyright holders

Academic libraries are creating copyright positions to respond to the evolving and litigious copyright environment associated with digital content and services. This paper reports on a study of advertisement trends for copyright positions available in academic libraries. A content analysis of job advertisement data was carried out on data generated from JobLIST , an electronic listserv of the American Library Association (ALA) where library positions from the United States and Canada are posted. Job data were generated by searching the JobLIST database using the following search terms: copyright , intellectual property , scholarly communication , repository , electronic resources , licensing , and digital.

Some useful tips not just for teenagers, but for any users of social media looking to protect their privacy and online. I particularly liked the tip on modeling proper social media use for teens. The district I am in has blocked all social media sites (even Pinterest!) and so the students use VPNs to get around the blocks instead of allowing teachers and others to realistically demonstrate how to navigate social media sites in a healthy way it becomes something that is forbidden to be on.

A study into how teenagers and college students often view privacy settings on Facebook and their audiences on Twitter in terms of social identity without realizing how much can be datamined for advertisement purposes.

How teenagers weigh perceived risks versus benefits in what they reveal online. Many teenagers supply false information in order to protect their identity which makes online advertising less effective towards them. Also, study indicates that how savvy a teen is in regards to thinking critically about the intent of advertisements and the strategies companies use offline the more they were able to identify the same tactics online.

Combining data from a school principal survey with student demographics and achievement data, the present study aimed to develop a much needed understanding of ICT usage in Ontario's K-12 public schools. Results indicated equitable first-order access to technology for schools, early integration of ICT from the earliest grades, frequent application of ICT in teaching, and an enabling effect of ICT on additional access to learning resources and distance learning.

This study explores K-12 teachers' perceptions of the benefits and barriers to technology integration by either teachers or students in K-12 instruction. The sample was composed of 68 students enrolled in online classes in the graduate studies in education department of a small private liberal arts institution in the southeast.

The integration of technology in classrooms is rapidly emerging as a way to provide more educational opportunities for students. As virtual learning environments become more popular, evaluating the impact of this technology on student success is vital. "Exploring the Effectiveness of Online Education in K-12 Environments" combines empirical evidence and best practices in current K-12 distance learning and virtual schools.

Despite the growing interest in 1:1 computing initiatives, relatively little empirical research has focused on the outcomes of these investments. The current special edition of the Journal of Technology and Assessment presents four empirical studies of K-12 1:1 computing programs and one review of key themes in the conversation about 1:1 computing among advocates and critics.

2012 was a year of rapid change for education with the advent of MOOCs-Massive Open Online Courses-available for the world to use to learn for free. But what does this mean for the role of the librarian? How has the landscape in education changed, and what are the issues and challenges that librarians now face? This article reviews the position of libraries in the emergence of MOOCs and the role that a librarian could undertake within the research, production, and presentation of MOOCs.

This paper provides an overview of some of the major copyright issues for libraries in a digital environment. It explores how statutory and case law determine the path libraries must take to accomplish their mission. Copyright law is complex and ambiguous. It poses many challenges for librarians, but it is crucial that librarians have a basic understanding of the various provisions of the law in order to make informed decisions. However, the law is only one part of the equation. The interpretation of the law by the courts must also be constantly evaluated for potential impact to libraries.

This article reports on the results of a national survey of academic librarians and library staff (N = 226) in the United States about their awareness of various copyright policies, partnerships with campus groups to address copyright issues, and training needs. A majority of the survey respondents reported that they have answered copyright-related questions in the workplace, yet only 49% (n = 98) of the respondents perceived they were prepared to provide copyright information to library users.
