Canada's Competition Bureau sues Bell, Rogers and Telus over alleged misleading adverti... - 1 views

  •
"as been a recurring subject for some time, and it's now been brought to the fore once again in the form of a multi-million dollar lawsuit. The country's Competition Bureau announced today that, after a five-month investigation, it has decided to sue all three carriers and the industry group that represents them over ads that promote so-called premium texting services. In addition to demanding that such ads stop, the government agency is seeking full customer refunds for any charges incurred and a $10 million penalty from each carrier, plus an additional $1 million from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. For its part, the CWTA has unsurprisingly taken issue with the lawsuit, saying in a statement that it reached out to the Bureau last year to discuss the issue, and that its actions today "could disrupt the text message services, such as severe weather alerts, charitable donations, flight status updates or sports scores, on which millions of Canadian consumers depend." You can find that full statement, and the Competition Bureau's announcement of the lawsuit, at the links below."

Apple to start USB power adapter trade-in program, offer new chargers for $10 - 1 views

"esigned properly and could result in safety issues." With that in mind, the House that Jobs Built is instituting the USB Power Adapter Takeback Program, which will let folks pick up first-party iPad, iPhone and iPod plugs for $10 (instead of the usual $19) if they return any of their current adapters. Don't plan to stock up on the power-giving cubes though, as the deal is limited to one adapter for each device you own."
  •
Huh. The family insists that the accident happened with a genuine Apple charger. Funny how people are going all crazy about third-party devices. As far as I'm concerned, the whole thing is stupid anyway. Her phone was *plugged into the wall*, and this in a part of the world where the electrical supply is at 220 VAC, and she grabbed it while *getting out of the bath*. Does nobody see how this could go south? :-P

Microsoft's new interface: FREAKING HOLOGRAMS | Ars Technica - 1 views

"l be put most spectacularly on display by HoloLens, a wearable computer that uses tricks of light to project three-dimensional virtual objects on top of the environment around the user, allowing them to interact with the "holograms" using voice and gesture commands. They're not really holograms, in the purely technical sense-there are no lasers involved, and the display is not using diffraction or interference to create a holographic projection. Instead, they use a high definition stereographic display and fool the eye into seeing things laid atop the real world, placed in the same context as real-world obje"

Malware scam appears to use GPS data to catch speeding Pennsylvania drivers | The Verge - 1 views

  •
"that the data is coming from an app with permission to track phone GPS data. That could either be a legitimate app that has been compromised, or a purpose-built malicious app that was uploaded online. As anyone who has used a GPS navigator knows, location data can be used to roughly calculate your travel speed. The emails ask for payment of the speeding ticket, but no apparatus is set up to receive such fines. Instead, a link that claims to lead to a photo of the user's license plate instead loads malware onto the user's device."

  • my cell phone will know I ordered a pizza. Will know when I get in my car. Will know who is in the car with me. And will give me contextual data that will make my life better. For instance, on my todo list I might have put “pick up a hammer at the hardware store.” It will know that Round Table Pizza is near the hardware store. It will know I have an extra 15 minutes. It can use Waze to route me to the hardware store first, tell me to pick up my hammer, and then head to Round Table to pick up that pizza. All while measuring how many steps I took (Nike Fuel points!) and telling me who has crossed my path. Oh, Joseph Smarr, who works at Google, is also at the Round Table? Cool! (He lives in Half Moon Bay too so this could happen at any time)

Hard-Coded Bluetooth PIN Vulnerability in LIXIL Satis Toilet - 1 views

  •
inding 1: Hard-Coded Bluetooth PIN *****Credit: Daniel Crowley of Trustwave SpiderLabs CVE: CVE-2013-4866 CWE: CWE-259 The "My Satis" Android application has a hard-coded Bluetooth PIN of "0000" as can be seen in the following line of decompiled code from the application: BluetoothDevice localBluetoothDevice = BluetoothManager.getInstance().execPairing(paramString, "0000") As such, any person using the "My Satis" application can control any Satis toilet. An attacker could simply download the "My Satis" application and use it to cause the toilet to repeatedly flush, raising the water usage and therefore utility cost to its owner. Attackers could cause the unit to unexpectedly open/close the lid, activate bidet or air-dry functions, causing discomfort or distress to user.

So if you think that article about the Microsoft CEO saying women's shouldn't ask for raises was bad.... This article includes some of the "highlights" of the most terrible things said. Notable companies include; Facebook, Google and GitHub to name just a few. GitHub surprised me since I'd not heard anything bad about them to date really - so here's more from a female designer and developer who quit her job at GitHub: http://readwrite.com/2014/05/21/empower-women-in-technology-julie-ann-horvath-jill-abramson

Also - it might be painful but if you read most of the way through you get to the real funny part. They handed out BINGO cards at the beginning of the talk!! You can probably guess what were in the squares of the bingo cards - that's right.....typical statements from men at talks like these about "supporting women".

Where are the commands for setting steering offset and accelerator pedal position? :-P
  •
Assuming the Model S does use a drive-by-wire system, it's likely separate from the computer that manages the accessory systems. It may provide some diagnostic messages ie. "I am rotated to this radian". As far as throttle control goes, if the same system that handles the accessory systems handles the cruise control system, well, good grief.
