Malaysia and Australia have some similarities for multiculturalism. a country with diverse cultural backgrounds will face up to challenges and difficulties on the mutual understanding and social equality. So communication and learning from each other is important and necessary.

Rudd's new vision for Asia-Pacific | The Australian - 0 views

  • Australians have grown too cynical about Asian institutions and regional diplomacy.
  • the great English poet Francis Thompson: "Our hearts, with many schemes so flawed, have grown cynical and bored."
  • This is Rudd's most ambitious statement for the G20 yet. The organisation was founded because of the Asian financial crisis a decade ago. It is small enough to be manageable but big enough to have the clout to affect all parts of the globe.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Although I think Rudd in this essay focuses too much on China, at the expense say of India, he makes his usual sound case that China should have a more prominent role in global governance institutions. However, his balanced view on China is explicit. Rudd writes that he is "neither naive nor idealistic about China's nationalist ambitions".

BBC NEWS | Programmes | From Our Own Correspondent | Senegal's youths dream of Europe - 0 views

  • We sat on the ground and the message from all these fishermen was along the lines of: "They may be talking about an economic crisis in Europe but if you want a real crisis it's right here in Senegal."
  • A very animated and infuriated Abdoulaye told me that his son left for Spain in a fishing boat five years ago, and was now living a far better life than he was. "I am 45-years-old and I don't have half of what he has now, like a nice house and a car," he said, adding that he would do all he could to send more of his relatives to Europe. None of these young men referred at any stage to the risks of getting to Europe even though hundreds - probably thousands - have died at sea in recent years. Senegal looks to Europe more than most countries I have visited. Not so much to Spain, but to the old colonial power, France, which has maintained strong links.
  • If it were not for the West African street traders, the whole of Europe would be squinting and struggling to keep their trousers up, judging by the number of people I have met who said they made their living selling these goods on the streets.

  • I used to be able to work in Italy for just one month and earn enough money to spend the rest of the year living it up in Senegal," Vieux told me. He said 10 years ago in Italy people would come knocking on the door offering work but not any more
  • But much of the development is through money sent home from abroad, and economic crisis or not, Europe will still be the target for many young Senegalese looking to swap the horse and cart life for a Renault in the fast lane.

Aids ist ein Massenmörder: Campaign - 0 views

shared by anonymous on 08 Sep 09 - Cached
  • The "AIDS is a mass murderer" TV and cinema advert
  • The new campaign, designed by Regenbogen e.V. in conjunction with the advertising agency das comitee, speaks in clear terms: its slogan is "AIDS is a mass murderer". It features the greatest mass murderers in recent history having sex. TWITTER PROFIL
  • The "Adolf" poster The "Saddam" poster The "Stalin" poster
  •
Content Warning: Male and Female Nudity. The Germany made "Aids is a mass murderer" campaign has caused quite some stir, interestingly more outside of Germany than in Germany. It not only depicts Hitler, but also Saddam and Stalin in a poster AD campaign, as well as (very graphic) video. The controversy around the campaign raises a few questions, in regards to contemporary understanding of the holocaust (and other brutal mass-murdering regimes), ethics and contemporary sexual behaviour as well as acceptance depiction of sexual imagery in popular media and advertisement.

Stop provoking the people, Foreign Ministry tells media | The Jakarta Post - 0 views

  •
I agree that media at times could work as the devil's advocate in stirring up animosity amongst the people and in this case between Indonesia and Malaysia. It is sad though because these two countries are very much similar since historically the native malays in Malaysia are from Indonesia itself. The national language of Malaysia which is Bahasa Malaysia (Bahasa Melayu) is historically from Bahasa Indonesia as well. How can there so much animosity when there is so much similarity that is ignored or intentionally over looked.

McCurry wins row with McDonald's - 0 views

  • The American fast-food giant McDonald's has lost an eight-year legal battle to prevent a Malaysian restaurant calling itself McCurry.
  • McDonald's argued that the use of the "Mc" prefix infringed its trademark. But the Federal Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that there was no evidence to show McCurry was trying to pass itself off as part of the McDonald's empire.
  • The owner of McCurry insists its "Mc" prefix is an abbreviation for Malaysian Chicken Curry.
  •
interesting outcome of this 8 year-long legal battle
  •
This news is of particular interest to me because I am from Malaysia and when the news broke out in Malaysia, I thought it was hilarious (at the expense of the owner of McCurry and McDonalds). The funny thing thing is there are numerous of eateries or restaurants that sound similar to the American imports, and this not only happens in Malaysia but in other countries as well. For example, there was a fast food fried chicken joint similar to KFC, that is called McDota (I can't remember the exact spelling) in Malaysia quite some time ago. Anyways, I just thought this piece of news is interesting and funny!

BBC NEWS | Technology | Call to use more government data - 0 views

  • One of President Obama's campaign promises was to make the US government more open and transparent.
  • "It's a great opportunity to redefine how government works," said Mr O'Reilly
  • "We've got to recognise that we can't treat the American people as subjects but as co-creators of ideas. We need to tap into the vast amounts of knowledge... in communities across the country.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • "We have gotten into this model of thinking the government is like a vending machine. We pay taxes and get roads and schools, police and armies and whatever else.
  • "The new model is about participation. It's about the government saying we will provide you with these services that you can build upon.
  • One of the most cited examples of how government-as-a-platform works best can be seen at a site called Apps for Democracy.
  • Apps for Democracy which aimed to "engage citizen technologists to build the perfect technology solution to meet their needs".
  • "With the help of these home-grown innovators, we're engaging the community in government and building a digital democracy model for governments everywhere,"
  • Mr O'Reilly warned that "going back to politics as usual" was not an option and that in the midst of the government's willingness to open up its data, there were some pitfalls to look out for.

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Newsnight | The rise of Israel's military rabbis - 0 views

  • Military rabbis are becoming more powerful. Trained in warfare as well as religion, new army regulations mean they are now part of a military elite.
  • One of their main duties is to boost soldiers' morale and drive, even on the front line.
  • The 19-year-olds I spoke to at the seminary told me religious soldiers like them can make the army behave better and become "more moral".
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • The settlement issue could well tear the army apart, he told me, adding that most of his officers were settlers these days.
  • "The morals of the battlefield cannot come from a religious authority. Once it does, it's Jihad. I know people will not like that word but that's what it is, Holy War. And once it's Holy War there are no limits."

War and Family Left Behind, Lone Afghan Youths Seek a Life in Europe - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • “I want to go to school,” he said in English. “I would like it if I could be — it sounds like a lot to ask — an engineer of computing.”
  • Although some are as young as 12, most are teenagers seeking an education and a future that is not possible in their own country, which is still struggling with poverty and violence eight years after the end of Taliban rule.
  • Once in France, the boys face more hardship. The Paris police have started conducting nightly searches to prevent Afghan migrants from sleeping in Villemin Square. The 15-year-old was placed in a cheap hotel, while others were put in temporary shelter in an unused subway station. Others find their own shelter under bridges and beside a canal

China rebuts report of violating India airspace - 0 views

  •
China does not encroach on other countries' airspace, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu Tuesday at a press conference.
  •
i am not sure when the relationship between India and CHina becomes bad. I can find online news recently, there are a lot of issues about the war prediction in the future between two nations. I wouldn't believe it can be the truth because if so, I cannot imagine how many innocent people will be dead. Please do not forget, both India and CHina are the first two countries with the largest number of world's population.

China Concubines Return Thanks To Increasing Capitalism - 0 views

  • Concubines are no longer kept hidden away behind closed doors. In modern China's far more open society, concubines can be seen in the shopping malls and cafes of the cities, especially in the south, where there are thousands of what are known as "er nai" or "second breast".
  • "China's future will be undermined in those corrupt officials' hands," wrote one outraged citizen. Another described the corrupt cadres who keep concubines as "absolutely superfluous, vampires, corrupt scum. They deserve to be killed".
  •
I don't know if concubines should be moral issue or not. in traditional China, man had right to re-marry and lived with more than two wivies. today, even though the law doesn't allow re-marry, many men still can find lover outside without marital relationship.

Sudan Court Fines Woman for Wearing Trousers - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Sudan is partly governed by Islamic law, which calls for women to dress modestly. But the law is vague. According to Article 152 of Sudan’s penal code, anyone “who commits an indecent act which violates public morality or wears indecent clothing” can be fined and lashed up to 40 times.
  • She was arrested in July, along with 12 other women, who were caught at a cafe wearing trousers. “I am Muslim; I understand Muslim law,” Mrs. Hussein said in an interview on Friday. “But I ask: What passage in the Koran says women can’t wear pants? This is not nice.”

Mainland cancels events following Dalai's Taiwan visit - 0 views

  • The Dalai's visit, ostensibly aimed at comforting victims of last month's deadly typhoon, has posed the most serious challenge to relations between the island and the mainland since Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou took office 15 months ago, the party said.
  • We got a call from them saying they could not attend. They said they had to postpone the visit due to technical reasons and would not provide details. But I think you and I know why,"
  • Beijing had warned that the Dalai Lama's visit was "bound to have a negative influence on the relations between the mainland and Taiwan."

  •
The mainland has canceled or postponed several events meant to highlight its rapidly improving relations with Taiwan, apparently in a show of dissatisfaction over the Dalai Lama's visit to the island, Taiwan's ruling party said Tuesday
