This OLC Institute post suggested three purposes and provided numerous examples of social media implementation and integration that may serve to "support learning in online courses" (2016.05.17, ¶3, ff.), namely:
1. Amplifying the physical and psychological engagement of learners (Engagement using social media);
2. Providing instruction to "enhance learning outcomes" (Instruction involving social media); and
3. Facilitating access to, and increasing availability of academic, career, and other "support services" (Student support using social media).

ALISON provides free online interactive education to help people acquire basic workplace skills.
Right now, a lot of free education is thrown online without a clear sense of how it will help people prepare themselves for employment.
The decision to make everything on ALISON free remains the key factor that distinguishes the site from others of its type, and makes it globally valuable.
In this opinion piece, David Bornstein examined Advanced Learning Interactive Systems Online (ALISON) and found it addressed a global need for job skill development.
Melissa Venable distinguished between largely "learner-driven" MOOCs and "more structured" course offerings (¶3), outlined potential gains from taking part (Benefits of Participation), and suggested points for potential participants to consider before joining MOOCs, namely: Learning Objectives, Target Audience[s], Schedule[s] and Expectations, and Documented Learning (built-in or personal).
In this post, Byrne suggested, "Rather than trying to remember when to revoke access to the folder, you could use the Auto-Expire script to set an expiration date for your shared folders" (2013.01.25, para 1). He displayed a Tekzilla Daily video from which he "learned about the script", and also point out a Digital Inspiration blog post that provides instructions as well.
