The division between work and play is a myth... Innovation companies today don't ask and don't care about basic skills, grades, or SAT scores-instead, they want to know if you can brainstorm all the possible uses of bubble wrap.

"The result is our new report, Connected Citizens: The Power, Peril and Potential of Networks. Through more than 70 examples, we found networked communities pushing for open government, banding together to care for the elderly, enlisting volunteer coders to make online aid maps for earthquake ravaged Haiti, and more."

This pampered private school elite can only lead to US decline | Naomi Wolf | Comment i... - 1 views

  • "How many times has a kid said to me,'You work for me; I am your employer,'" sighed one such administrator to me, recently. This unbalancing of the power relationship in the parents' direction has forced private school principals and teachers to cater to parents by increasingly offering an obstacle-free school experience – since that is what parents demand.

I have actually also heard this stated by public school children (and parents) in the form of "my taxes pay your salary". This is not an independent school thing alone...
  • the teachers work for them; rather than serving as authority figures to the kids, educators at such schools complain that wealthy US parents increasingly expect "service" and "deliverables" from teachers, so won't brook a poor grade or evaluation, or a difficult experience for their child

The Cognitive Age - New York Times - 0 views

  • The globalization paradigm has led, in the political arena, to a certain historical narrative: There were once nation-states like the U.S. and the European powers, whose economies could be secured within borders. But now capital flows freely. Technology has leveled the playing field. Competition is global and fierce.

  • “I think in the future, capitalization will disappear,” said Professor Sterling, who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley. In fact, he said, when his teenage son asked what the presence of the capital letter added to what the period at the end of the sentence signified, he had no answer.

The Nuts & Bolts of 21st Century Teaching | Powerful Learning Practice - 0 views

  •
his is the sixth time I've taught a unit on the Holocaust, each one slightly different than the last. In the past, my students learned most of the information via lecture, notes and videos. Because I was responsible for distilling the information, I learned much more than they did. This semester they're doing it all themselves. And the end result will be a classroom Holocaust museum curated by my grade 10 English students. The unit involves inquiry, collaborative, and project-based learning all in one.
