Agencies can now upload their data to the FISMA-compliant Data.gov cloud platform, link it in real-time to systems of record, or even federate data from their own sites. Data.gov brings it all together into one virtualized government-wide catalog.

Linked data is a powerful approach to sharing information across the web. It is enabling governments to publish their data to better inform and empower citizens, enabling companies to connect information across silos to aid decision making, and enabling developers to combine data from across organizations to deliver better services. This guidance has been produced by the Local Public Data Panel, and builds on the draft guidance published in June this year by the panel, on comments made on that guidance, the Treasury guidance to central government departments on releasing their spending data, and experience from publishing the data, and, crucially, using and analysing it.

The Prime Minister and CLG Ministers wish to see local authorities publish granular local spending data. The Public Sector Transparency Board has been set up to drive an open data agenda. Many local authorities also wish to publish such data. Camden Council asked the Panel for advice on publishing information about payments to suppliers greater than £500 in value.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude and Business Minister Edward Davey have outlined plans for a new Public Data Corporation. The Corporation will, for the first time, bring together Government bodies and data into one organisation and provide an unprecedented level of easily accessible public information and drive further efficiency in the delivery of public services.

National Archives instructions for transferring data, information and knowledge resulting from 'Machinery of Government' changes. Updated this year, the document unfortunately makes no mention of how Linked Data might help in the complex business of moving ownership of information. There is reference to XML schema guidance from 2008 from the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/electronicrecords/advice/default.htm Whilst it implies that tacit knowledge transfer is important, there is no guidance or tools for this and relies on codification rather than knowledge sharing.
