Data.gov Next Generation also makes it easier for government agencies to share their public data. Agencies can now upload their data to the FISMA-compliant Data.gov cloud platform, link it in real-time to systems of record, or even federate data from their own sites. Today we're introducing Google Fusion Tables on Labs, an experimental system for data management in the cloud. It draws on the expertise of folks within Google Research who have been studying collaboration, data integration, and user requirements from a variety of domains. Fusion Tables is not a traditional database system focusing on complicated SQL queries and transaction processing. Instead, the focus is on fusing data management and collaboration: merging multiple data sources, discussion of the data, querying, visualization, and Web publishing. We plan to iteratively add new features to the systems as we get feedback from users.

Michael, It's interesting that I had already Diigo bookmarked Google Fusion Labs on 26th August. This illustrates something I was observing with Steve the other day; that social bookmarking seems to be 'one-way'. In other words we all stuff things into Diigo, but why? Other than transitory email alerts to new bookmarks, I have no feel for emerging themes, or common bookmarks via Diigo. This is something the Knowledge Hub will no doubt surface in activity streams and emerging themes (I hope!)

This guidance has been produced by the Local Public Data Panel, and builds on the draft guidance published in June this year by the panel, on comments made on that guidance, the Treasury guidance to central government departments on releasing their spending data, and experience from publishing the data, and, crucially, using and analysing it.

So you've got some data that you'd like to be Linked Data? The principles are simple but the devil is in the detail. The Prime Minister and CLG Ministers wish to see local authorities publish granular local spending data. The Public Sector Transparency Board has been set up to drive an open data agenda. The Prime Minister has made a specific commitment that new items of local government spending over £500 be published on a council-by-council basis from January 2011. http://www.number10.gov.uk/news/statements-and-articles/2010/05/letter-t... Many local authorities also wish to publish such data. Camden Council asked the Panel for advice on publishing information about payments to suppliers greater than £500 in value.

Warwickshire County Council is taking open and linked data seriously. They're opening up data and supporting the developer community to do something useful with it through a Hack Warwickshire competition (open til 25 June). And they're open to suggestions of what data should be open next.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude and Business Minister Edward Davey have outlined plans for a new Public Data Corporation. The Corporation will, for the first time, bring together Government bodies and data into one organisation and provide an unprecedented level of easily accessible public information and drive further efficiency in the delivery of public services.

The Upload page lets a council officer, logged in to esd-toolkit, upload a CSV (comma separated variables) spreadsheet of spending data for hosting as Linked Data or download in various tidied formats, including Linked Data for local hosting.

The Data Enrichment Service (DES) is an information extraction service for unstructured text. It allows you to extract things such as names, places and organisations. It is focussed on UK data, with much of the work on data.gov.uk being utilised.

Our goal with Kasabi is to help make data as easy to use, and as easy to publish as possible. We also want to help people unlock the value inherent in data, whether that means making it freely available - in order to drive innovation - or to explore more commercial models. "Public Data" is the objective, factual, non-personal data on which public services run and are assessed, and on which policy decisions are based, or which is collected or generated in the course of public service delivery.

The UK Government has fully committed to providing data in an open and transparent way and is encouraging innovative re-use of public data. OpenUp, from TSO, shows how data can be opened up and re-used to maximise its information value.
