i'VE GOT A PET. - 4 views

I thought I'd post this short movie. It's an example of ICT activities being done in a class I had my last practicum in. It is a simple activity that the teacher did, using ICTs that were readily availble.. The teacher takes a traditional printed text being used in guided reading (PM readers) and helps the students produce a digital text based on the language used in the original text. Students select images from google images and then use a digital camera to take photos or video, and manipulate the images using IWB software, to place themselves in the digital text. The images are uploaeded into Movie Maker where additonal text, ddialogue and sound are added. The finished artefact is then uploaded toYouTube so that it can be placed on the school website for sharing. The students and their families can view the new digital text at home. The movie is also presented at the school assembly. The teacher does ICT activities like this on a regular basis in English. If you google Tyalgum Public School and click on More News you can view other ICT activities the Kindergarten, Year , Year 2 class did. I think this type of ICT activity gives the students a sense of ownership of their learning.

This is a great activity. Just emphasises how important it is that we know how to use all of these ICTs in the classroom because if we don't know them this activity could take a long time or ICTs wouldn't be used in such a great way. Out of interest how long did it take?

Enjoyed the video showing how technology can teach children in a fun and engaging way to learn but also requiring them to engage in real life problem solving, writing and reflection. Interesting how they chose to access the program from home too. That says a lot. I thought that this would be more middle years teaching. Do you think this could be used in Primary?

13 reasons to use educational technology in lessons - ICT and Computing in Ed... - 7 views

  • ICT can provide both the resources and the pedagogical framework for enabling pupils to become effective independent learners. For example, computer programs are available that adjust themselves to the pupils’ level and then set appropriate tasks and give feedback on performance. Used wisely, these can help pupils to move on.
  • Where information and communications technology (ICT) is taught well, it has been shown to enhance pupils’ levels of understanding and attainment in other subjects. That’s because “real” ICT is more about thinking skills than about mastering particular software applications.
  • Pupils usually enjoy using computers and other types of technology, so lessons which make use of it start off with an advantage (which is all too often squandered).

  • Just about every aspect of modern life involves educational technology; therefore, to not make use of it in the curriculum is anachronistic.

this is an important area. Used correctly ICT can support students that require greater levels of scaffolding and do so in a way that allows the student to maintain control of their own learning path.
  • Educational technology puts the pupil in control (if it is well-designed), enabling her to personalise the interface, select and create resources, and even choose what to learn

This needs to be managed well as few students have the skills to fully manage what they are learning. Perhaps they do however the constraints of the curriculum require they cover set criteria. Choices are available but these still need to be guided and negotiated with the teacher

motivation also extends to reduced behaviour issues in a class where students are engaged in their learning

Believe this could be really beneficial info for Assignment 1 in regards to why we should enable the use of ICT with in the classroom - hopefully you will be able to resonate with a few pointers in context to something you may have experienced or be familiar with.

Nice work, you certainly have a handle on some effective ICTs to engage and connect with your students :-)

I think the idea of flipped classrooms is something to explore for those working with older students who can take some more responsibility of their learning

Why Blog? | GPS Sensational Sevens! - 0 views

A couple of Year 7 students write a blog post (on their class blog) outlining why they think blogging is a good idea. The class blog is also a good example of some of the factors you might like to consider when blogging with a class (e.g. having a charter, clear roles and responsibilities etc).

I played the maths challenge Dragonbox, and was just going to spend a few minutes on this game but I found it fun to keep going and work out how to continue with the problems when I got stuck, until I understood the concept that the challenge was teaching. In a way I was trying to be creative in solving these problems along the way and was learning as well. This idea could be carried on outside the came creating my own idea of Algebra using everyday items. I think that when learning is taking place creativity and innovation are not far behind. Children can create their own customised Avatar - simple activity with loads of potential.
  •
I think that this is a great idea for children and teenagers. By allowing students to create an Avatar, it gives them the opportunity to create an image that represents them or they can go completely crazy and create something far from the truth. Giving them an avatar in an educational environment then makes the learning fun and enjoyable as they feel they are playing just one big game. I have used this concept in a Contact Centre with Adults and have had success with it, purely for the reason it allows creativity and staff did not need to leave their desks to go to training.

Sharing Teacher blog - good for a laugh!

I like the way she describes her job- loves the kids but struggles with the job. This is interesting to me because I feel the same (don't know if it I for the same reasons) because I whole- heartedly believe in diversity and the individual child BUT I also know/ have seen how strict and institutionalised schools remain to be and this often gets in the way of the kind of teacher I thought I could be. It is interesting and worth thinking about though because I am sure we all want to help each child as much as we can but lack of time, resources and 'the halo effect' will get in the way at some point.

Miss Jordan shares her teaching experiences, classroom activities and students learning experiences. Miss Jordan is based in Victoria and is in a primary setting. A 3/4 class. I think Miss Jordan is interesting as she has regular posts and shares information that is relevant to other teachers. Miss Jordan also uses technology in different ways to help her students learn.

Technology and Teaching: Finding a Balance - 13 views

  •
I found this article interesting as it reflects on the importance of embracing technology to benefit our students for the future.
  •
Thanks for the article! I found this really interesting as I think as educators we do need to find that balance that works well in your classroom. There may be students that struggle with technology so I'm not sure if you would continue to use it as much as other classrooms...... Very interesting!!

Games and Virtual Worlds | - 0 views

  • Computer-based games and virtual worlds provide opportunities for learners to be immersed in situations in which they can experience and get close to phenomena and processes
  • This immersion helps them develop tacit/implicit understanding and intuitions about such phenomena and processes as they think about choices, take action, and see the impact of their decisions in a meaningful context.
  • It is difficult to get the integration of games and learning right.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Some of the best results in recent years have emerged from virtual worlds through thoughtful design of the learning environment that leveraged what we know about how children learn, especially in collaborative, technology-mediated spaces.
  • In the design perspective with the longest history, games have been viewed as conduits or vehicles for the delivery of curricular content
  • The research literature suggests three different perspectives on designing games for learning
  • Second, with the growing sophistication of game play and its rise in the general population, educators have looked for game elements or “game mechanics” that can be borrowed and transferred to educational settings to improve engagement
  • A third perspective on the role of games and virtual worlds in education is organic: looking for and exploiting curricular topics inherent in popular games
  • Virtual worlds are typically more focused on exploration than a specific game mechanic and they open up other possibilities for learning
  • Research on science learning in these multi-user immersive virtual environments (Barab, et al., 2010; Dede, 2009; Neulight et al., 2007) suggests that authentic designs and contextual narratives around science phenomena are not only engaging but also help learners acquire deep science inquiry skills and conceptual knowledge
