Make your own Word Search with Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker! - 0 views

  •
I have often used word searchers in lesson plans on placements for two reasons, I find it a good activity to settle students into the classroom or begin a lesson and it can used to activate prior knowledge. An example I have used is teaching fractions the students had to used prior knowledge and find words the ycould remember about fractions with the word search.

Teaching, Learning, and the "Curse of Knowledge" | ASCD Inservice - 6 views

  • This “curse of knowledge” highlights a problem for all educators: once you know something, it is difficult to imagine not knowing it.
  • Once you know something, it’s hard to imagine not knowing it. And that, in turn, makes it harder for you to communicate to a novice.”
  • those who know something deeply (like the expert chess players) think differently about the content than do amateurs
  •
Another optional reading from week 1.

I love the second quote! I find my head hurts if I try too hard to imagine not knowing something. I find as a teacher it really interesting seeing students going from 'I don't understand this' to 'How did I not see this before?'. I love seeing the flash of understanding so I really love that quote!

Changing education from the ground up Sir Ken Robinson - 2 views

  •
I found this to be quite fascinating and I can relate to what he is saying. I find it interesting how he explains how the governments try to change education and control it from the top down. By putting in leaders, directors or principals, then expecting everyone else down the ladder to conform. He also talks about adaptability and creativity, and how our current systems do not foster these qualities. I am keen to find out what other people think! I have also shared this on my blog. http://rachelyates82.wordpress.com/
