ICT in Primary Education

Hello, as an individual who has both worked and volunteered with children with physical and intellectual disabilities I am very interested in how ICT can be used in classrooms to aid in their learning and improve their learning environment. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have recently gained a groundswell of interest, becoming a significant research area for many scholars around the globe. One of the reasons for this surge is that nature of ICT has greatly changed the face of education. For most European countries, the use of ICT, in education and training, has become a priority during the last decade; however, very few have achieved progress. Indeed, only a small percentage of schools, in a few countries, effectively used ICT to support and change the teaching and learning process in diverse subject areas. Others are still in the early phases of adopting ICT.

Not only has technology entered nearly every area of our personal life, it's the rare industry that isn't computerized, networked, and advertised on Facebook. Except one: education.

An oldie, but a goodie! Scratch is a free tool designed to support the development of coding skills. Available in 40+ languages and aimed at students aged 8 and up. Students can program their own interactive stories, games, and animations - and share their creations with others in the online community.

Actually there is also a new curriculum for Scratch with worksheets: http://scratched.gse.harvard.edu/guide/download.html It has also been translated into several languages. This is a very helpful tool if you want to start introducing programming to a class. I have been using it now twice, and I am happy with the outcome. In particular the worksheets are so helpful and give you more time to support the individual child.

I have use code.org as an introduction before using scratch. It allows the children participate it in games involving angry birds, plants vs zombies, flappy birds and the disney frozen characters.
