  • The Technology for Rural Education Development (TECH4RED) project in the Cofimvaba schools district is a joint initiative between the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and is aimed at contributing to the improvement of rural education through technology-led innovation.

    A project in South Africa to train teachers in a rural area to "teach with ICTs". Tablets were used. 21st Century skills training was modeled during the 10 training sessions which was spread out over 30 weeks. A tremedoes amount of learning took place. I participated in the sustainability modelling which included Total Cost of Ownership calculations. This showed that tablet replacement could be up to 50% of the yearly operations costs.

    I post this because it is evidence of the type of learning which only ICTs make possible. While it is fascinating in itself, and Professor David Christian believes we should teach far more complicated science to young children, I have posted it as something to aim for. Won't it be fun when teachers and schools can create their own student/cohort specific learning sites like these.

    Presentation tip #1: Be a great presenter with Prezi presentation software. This is a wonderful new way of presentation. Easy and quick. One can use this instead of powerpoint presentation. In my experience, students love to explore prezi.

    This tool is amazing if you use google drive to send and receive files from your students Doctopus gives teachers the ability to mass-copy (from a starter template), share, and manage grading and feedback for student projects in Google Drive. Its tentacles copy and "hand out" Drive files to a roster of students, giving teachers full control over starter template, sharing configuration, folder organization and file naming, as well as visibility over all work in progress -- including the ability to bulk revoke and revert student editing rights around submission deadlines.

    my kids love making the robots dance on the robot boogie challenge! I would have suggested this myself. It's interesting to watch them switch from the sliders to inputting numbers, adjusting and checking the results.
