World Hunger: Food Scarcity - 0 views

  •
This article is concerned with world hunger and what can be done to rectify it. World hunger is, in fact, a problem with scarcity. The human race does not have enough resources to feed every individual. Ergo, food is involuntarily rationed in poorer countries. The article discusses what can and should be done to solve this problem, especially in Africa.
  •
I liked the article it is really interesting because the scarcity of food is a problem and rapidly increase from day to day. Also your explanation of the article is clear and easy to understand and you gave the important points in the article. In my opinion, food scarcity is the worst problem in the world rather than oil scarcity or other resources because food is nutrition it s the only thing that keep people physically strong and especially for countries that are struggling with scarcity and starvation needs to be helped by strong countries and governments.

Milk Allergy Problem Solved? - 0 views

  •
Many people are lactose intolerant, but this new genetically modified cow looks to solve those problems. If this new "tailless" cow is able to solve the lactose intolerance problem, than the demand for milk will increase, and the demand for soy milk or other milk substitutes will decrease.

Scarcity of food in the world - 1 views

  •
This website is very interesting on not just a world scale, because most people have already heard of the food problems in the world, but as well on a local scale. Meaning the article talks about how the average human is contributing to this growing problem.
  •
This article does a really good job at capturing the chain effect of changes in the world. An example is how they talk about how water shortage affects food shortages. People tend to overlook how much one disaster can cause many others.
  •
I agree full heartedly with what Landon has said, as well as what you have said Miro, in regards to the chain affect of changes as well as the fact that understanding problems on a local scale is important. I know that we in Indiana have really been hit hard by drought this year, and we have seen first-hand how the lack of rainfall hurts everyone. The chain reaction of sorts begins with the farmers, who had a horrible growing season in Indy this year, and thus they passed on the cost to the consumer. We are having to pay noticeably more for all grown products this year, and it really is a testament to the harsh reality that is the chain affect that Landon mentioned, as well as a wake up call to all of us here that economic problems exist everywhere, and just because we live in a well developed place doesn't mean we are safe from them.

Hitching a free ride can be good for all - 0 views

  •
This article is very interesting because it broadens the definition of a public good to include social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, as well as other open-source software like Google and Wikipedia. In this case, the free-rider problem would not really be a problem at all.

Melting Himalayas may magnify water scarcity - 2 views

  •
Recent data published in a report shows how increasing climate change over the next several years will affect the melting of glaciers in the Himilayas. It is estimated that, at the current rate of change, by the year 2035 the glaciers will have disappeared entirely. This could worsen an already serious problem of water scarcity in the area, where a lack of drinking water and the means necessary to distribute what little water is present cannot meet the demands of local inhabitants; over 1.5 billion of them.
  •
I think people understand the issue of glaciers, but they don't understand how important it is to act. People don't often think of glaciers as a source of water, but melting glaciers really does affect the amount of potential drinking water especially for inhabitants around the Himilayas.
  •
I agree with Landon. Everyone acknowledges that melting glaciers are a big problem, but no one fully understands what the potential consequences are. For me, it's hard to take action because the problem seems so far away.

CIL coal price pooling not acceptable to Bengal government - 0 views

  •
This really short article, i think, represents the real world problems of price marketing on a global scale. There is a bit of tension between two country's, West Benegal and India, over the price of coal. India is not cooperating with their usual partner to lower the price, and Benegal thinks that the importing cost is insanely high, thus we have a bit of a problem.

Price Controls: Obama's Higher-Education Agenda, Part 2 of 8 - 0 views

  •
Obama has mentioned that he will set a price control on the college education. With the increased price of universities and colleges, students are finding it increasingly more difficult to attend college. Therefore Obama has set out to confront this problem. He proposed to make permanent the American Opportunity tax credit. Colleges have to either lower their tuition rate or accept the fact that with higher tuition rates they will have lower funding from the governments.

Is Education a Public Good or a Private Good? - Innovations - The Chronicle of Higher E... - 0 views

  •
Education is both a public good and a private good. A public good is defined by two characteristics: non-excludability and non-rivalry. Public goods are for everyone and there is no competition for the good. Most people believe that a higher education is a pure public good but it is not. Society benefits when people get a higher. education. Statistically people with a college education tend to be more active citizens and their volunteering.with their volunteering and other activities benefiting those around them. Also statistics have shown that more new products and services are available to society because of the contributions of college graduates. These are the positive externalities of education. The negative aspect of education is  that even though the benefits of higher education are shared the costs for higher education are not shared. A higher education benefits society but the cost of a higher education proves a problem for those that want a higher education. Students themselves do reap some benefits: they are likely to be better off- both financially and otherwise-than their compatriots who do not go to college. However, students do not benefit as much as society. Therefore education is both a private and a public good.

As supply dwindles, Organic milk gets popular - 0 views

  •
This article talks about the organic milk shortages, that farmers can't buy enough food to feed their caws because the price for their food has been increased, as a result they give less nutrition to their caws and get less milk. But demand for organic milk is still high and in the article they will some suggestions how to solve that problem.
  •
The demand for organic milk is greater than supply because the production cost of creating organic milk is greater than the revenue. The reason for the shortage is that the cost of organic grain and hay has gone up but the price farmers receive for milk has not. As a result farmers buy less grain and hay which lowers the production of milk. The low supply of organic milk than in turn increases the overall price. The solution for this issue would be to increase the price of income the farmers would receive for their milk. If the solution were applied, the farmers would pay more for organic grain and more milk would be produced and consumers would be satisfied.

The Economy and Fed Policy: Follow the Demand - 0 views

  •
The primary reason unemployment remains high is a lack of demand. An aggregate demand shortfall is exactly the kind of problem monetary policy can address. Thus, we need powerful and continuing monetary stimulus to move toward maximum employment and price stability. The following is adapted from a presentation by the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco to The Forecasters Club in New York, New York, on February 21, 2013.

Fed's Rosengren: Government Fiscal Policy Big Drag on Economy - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the delicate balance between fiscal and monetary policy. The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Eric Rosengren, blames inefficient fiscal policy on the little-effect monetary policy is having on the economy. He argues that tight fiscal policy, or contractionary strategies, are making it more difficult for the Federal Reserve to lower the unemployment rate. However, it is important to understand that monetary or fiscal policy is not better than the other. Instead, it is likely to take a combination of strategies to combat problems in the economy.
