Cutting Through Environmental Issues: Technology as a double-edged sword - 0 views

  • Between 1870 and 1910, per capita income in the United States rose almost 40 percent, and the value of manufacturing output increased sevenfold.
  • It took nearly three generations before the first concerted efforts were made to bring pollution under control, but once begun, progress has been real. The air quality index for the United States now shows a 42 percent improvement since 1980.
  • Technology, in other words, is a double-edged sword-one capable both of doing and undoing damage to environmental quality.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • All the world’s economies continue to face big challenges in using energy-the lifeblood of the industrial age-while maintaining environmental quality.
  • Reductions in both by 70-80 percent since 1977 would not have been possible without substantial innovations in, most notably, electronics.
  • In the United States, the energy sector accounts for more than 85 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, with energy-related carbon dioxide alone responsible for about 80 percent.
  • Local generation by smaller plants can not only reduce transmission losses, but also improve air quality since they can be fueled by hydrogen and natural gas-much cleaner than coal on a per kilowatt hour basis
  • Industrial and vehicular emissions, particularly of nitrogen oxides, are also detrimental to water quality.
  • Technology and policy are now beginning to address runoff pollution, but it is hard to measure, much less control, because it stems from widely scattered, “nonpoint” sources.
  • the tools of geographic information systems (GIS) using remotely sensed data have offered new ways to identify and observe these sources
  • The technologies raise some privacy concerns, for instance, that could lead polluters to cloak or hide their polluting activities, further inhibiting pollution monitoring and cleanup
  • Bioremediation treats about 5-10 percent of all toxic chemicals and other hazardous waste; has successfully treated oil, gasoline, toluene, naphthalene, pentachlorophenol (a fungicide and wood preservative), and agricultural waste; and is being used at more than 30 munitions test areas across the United States.
  • These benefits must be balanced against what some critics view as potentially large drawbacks. One concern is that bioremediation may largely immobilize rather than fully remediate contamination. Another is that instead of reverting to its original state, the site will be transformed in some unexpected way. A third concern is that the potential risks of adding genetically altered organisms to the environment, or even redistributing naturally occurring ones, may not be fully understood. Great article summarizing various elements a mobile device can be used for in a hotel. Mobile devices are becoming a priority in younger generations & are often used not just for phone calls, but also text messaging, web searching & games. It's no surprise they are now being used to check in at hotels, pay bills & order room service. Cell phones provide guests a unique customer service that is inexpensive, quick & simple to use. Using mobile devices as room keys is an example that will save the hotel money in not having to purchase thousands of room keys & having to deal with replacement cards for guests. There are several benefits to utilizing mobile devices in the hospitality industry, but there are also drawbacks. Guests may choose to play games on their phone or watch movies on their phone's screens instead of paying to watch a movie on the hotel's television or attending activities offered by staff. This reduces the face-to-face customer service that many hotels are recognized for. It may take away from the hotel's superior guest service if a request does not go through the mobile device or it malfunctions when a guest is trying to enter their room. Whether or not hotel managers like it, mobile devices are becoming popular among guests & should be implemented.

Great article, and it will be interesting to see how over time, the industry evolves to adapt mobile technology on property. While it creates opportunities for hotels and guests respectively it will also create opportunities for hackers and those who have malicious intent with the sensitive types of data. As soon as hotels figure out ways to make this work, hackers will figure out ways to crack the system. I think the industry would have to work with cell phone network providers as well as hardware providers to ensure that these devices and transactions can remain secure.

This article discusses how technology is changing the experience you have while staying at a hotel, by making it much easier for the guest. The article specifically address 11 areas in which technology is changing the whole experience. First is a mobile wallet, which will make paying the bill a breeze, by wirelessly sending credit card information directly to the hotels computer. Next, how about using your smart phone as a room key, as well as using it as the in room phone, connecting you to the front desk anytime any place. Or using it to order room service, and having it delivered to you anywhere on the property by using your phones location services. Next the article discusses virtual concierge desk, which can be scattered around the property, making it easy to make dinner reservations without having to wait in line. And the last main points that are discussed are controlling the temperature, lighting, and in room entertainment from an app on your smart phone, letting you turn off and on lights from bed, and changing the temperature before you even get back to the room. And one day when you forget your smart phones power cord and think your taking a step back in time, because you cant use any of the new technology, no worries their will be one in the room.

  • hotel guests have little patience for bottlenecks at the front desk.
  • hotel networks need to support an almost countless number of apps -- from business-critical tools to a guest’s Instagram account
  • f IT can retire their physical legacy network infrastructure, they’ll no longer need to exhaust resources to support hardware
  • drawbacks
  • ack of visibility
  • IT teams lose that visibility when they rely on cloud
  • IT will need a monitoring solution that delivers visibility along each network path to pinpoint the actual cause of the issue and to resolve it.
  • comprehensive network performance monitoring solution
  • any performance monitoring solution
  • is able to account for ALL of the apps leveraging network capacity.
  • This includes the personal apps of guests using a specific locations WiFi
  • breaks down the barriers to visibility across the network where issues hindering performance could be hiding.
  •
The article starts off by addressing the most essential desire of the modern traveler, which is well performing WiFi. Based on a study in 2018, 89% of guests decide where to stay based on free reliable WiFi. This makes access to connectivity the top priority hospitality firms should be looking at for their guests. Poor WiFi experiences can lead to negative guests satisfaction which leads to a loss of repeat business and poor guest reviews. Connectivity also plays a crucial role in the operation of the business. As more business applications move to a wireless or cloud base, the need for strong connectivity increases. This allows room for new innovations to enhance the guest experience. A front desk agent can now check someone in on a cell phone rather than a desktop. This enables you to greet the guest at the door and complete a check-in while in route to their room, eliminating the need to wait in the lobby. Another benefit is with the advent of cloud computing, a hotel can reduce their hardware costs by not having to have a LAN at each property. They can run a centralized cloud server that all properties can log into. This also eliminates the need to have dedicated IT staff at each location. A major issue with this though is that IT loses visibility of the local delivery path of the network. This makes it difficult for them to locate and resolve issues that might happen, such as slow WiFi speeds. They are then challenged to develop a network performance monitoring solution that can account for all the apps working off the network, including the guest's, to gain visibility to be able to troubleshoot when issues arise. I think moving to a cloud based system to reduce hardware and labor costs will become standard for large hospitality firms. For brands with thousands of properties, this can be a great way to reduce expenses. There are certainly challenges that go along with this new technology, however I believe the ROI to be greater and I can see these companies m
  •
I can see these companies making the initial investments to perfect this method. You already see it in a majority of software applications moving to a cloud/web based system. This helps to greatly reduce hard drive storage needs and makes the programs accessible from anywhere. In this post-covid environment, remote accessibility has become a necessity.

Location-Based Marketing - The Ultimate Guide | GroundTruth - 1 views

  •
Location-based marketing is mobile marketing in one specific geographic region to the target customers. It uses location data, and this marketing is used based on the proximity to the store, deals, and events. The drawbacks of this are the opt-in requirements. It only works when the user uses the location technology on their phone, and the user allows the app to access the data. This type of marketing does not guarantee results, it has to be done correctly to work. There are also times where the recording of the customers location is not accurate and can have the opposite effect on the consumer if the marketing ads are at the inappropriate times. Overall, this type of marketing has proven to be really effective and is successful in driving more traffic to the business.

GDS System: What is And Why Should Hotels Use a GDS System? - 1 views

  • For hotels, the number one advantage of using a GDS is the increased demand that can be generated. This is because a global distribution systems represents a single entry point for a huge number of travel agents globally.
  • a hotel will need to pay a small initial setup fee, along with transaction fees, which are applicable to each booking on an individual basis. In some cases, an agency fee may also apply.

  • A GDS sytem stands for “global distribution system” and is a network, which facilitates transactions between companies in the travel industry. These networks are then used by travel agencies, who are provided with real-time inventory and pricing information for hotel rooms, as well as airline tickets, car rental services and other products.
  • While hotel owners may prefer direct bookings, the reality is that global distribution systems continue to serve as a vital distribution channel. Through the use of a GDS system, a hotel has the capacity to reach travel agents and a much wider customer base, resulting in increased demand, more bookings and greater revenue

How Much Should You Spend on Cybersecurity in 2022? by Lynn Goodendorf Spring 2022 - 0 views

  • Many hospitality companies are struggling with the question of how much to spend on cybersecurity especially in the context of revenue losses related to the pandemic.  The challenge is that the risk of cyberattacks is rapidly escalating.  There are several drivers of this alarming trend.  First, ransomware is growing in severity both in the scope and the scale of attacks as well as the amount of the ransom demand. Next is the increase in remote work during the global pandemic and the rush to facilitate at home working. And finally, small companies are increasingly targeted because they are “easy” victims and typically more vulnerable. As you might expect, the cost of cybercrime increased more than 50% from 2019 through 2020. According to a report by McAfee¹, the global cost is estimated to be more than $1 trillion and monetary losses are estimated at $945 billion.  Examples of hidden or intangible costs that are difficult to measure include system downtime, reduced efficiency, brand damage and loss of trust.  Expenses that are direct and easier to measure are consultant services, legal fees and cyber risk insurance premiums. Below is a chart published in the McAfee report that illustrates this trend.
  • Ransomware - a Denial of Service/Operations and often includes a data breach Business Email Compromise (BEC) - often involves Funds Transfer Fraud Computer Data Breach - theft of personal data such as cardholder data, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers and details, etc.   What is the best way to go about budgeting for cyber security risk?  As a starting point, be sure that you have a qualified information security professional managing your program of work. Regardless of the amount you spend, a knowledgeable and experienced cybersecurity professional can make well informed judgments about priorities in expenditures.   There are three well established strategies that can work together in combination.   Each strategy has advantages and drawbacks and it is not recommended to rely on a single approach. Below is a description of each way to go forward.
