Wiki Way » CogDogBlog - 0 views

  • ‘No one has “forgotten” or “left out” anything. You just haven’t added it yet.’
  • Sure its messy, its not perfect alpha order, it does not contain “everything” (like there is a central authority who knows everything about every twitter user), but it has/will have a lot of value because its “collective” input.
  •
This short insightful article from Alan Levine with the new media consortium explains wikis beautifully. I love it!
  •
This view on wikis is very accurate. Alan Levine is the VP of the new media consortium that wrote the horizon report.

A Threat So Big, Academics Try Collaboration - New York Times - 0 views

  • aimed at getting students and professors from different disciplines to collaborate in studying the environmental ramifications of production and consumption.
    • Vicki Davis

This is important because we are now seeing collaboration across disciplines -- something that has rarely happened in the history of science, but has been found to spark true creativity.
    • glen gatin

The threat may actually be to the academic industrial complex as much as to evnironment studies.
  •
Fascinating article about cross-disciplinary collaboration. This is becoming something that is possible through new means of using the Internet.

Google App Engine: Cashing in on the user data | Outside the Lines - CNET News.com - 0 views

  •
This is a good example on how data can / will be collected indirectly (implicitly).
  •
It's not evil, but they are tracking users and clickstreams, which (are) the real currency of the Web, and most people don't care. If you can get all data, you can target ads and the user experience, such as showing a site in a different color, depending on user profile."

Starbucks customers stampede website - web - Technology - smh.com.au - 0 views

  •
Hundreds of coffee-obsessed consumers chimed in moments after Starbucks launched a Web site asking customers to pitch changes the company should make to revive its struggling US business.
  •
A good current example where a large business is asking customers what it can do to improve its business. It is asking for the collective wisdom of its 'prosumers'. This strategy is very much advocated in Wikinomics.

Gin, Television, and Social Surplus - Here Comes Everybody - 0 views

  • Did you ever see that episode of Gilligan's Island where they almost get off the island and then Gilligan messes up and then they don't? I saw that one. I saw that one a lot when I was growing up. And every half-hour that I watched that was a half an hour I wasn't posting at my blog or editing Wikipedia or contributing to a mailing list. Now I had an ironclad excuse for not doing those things, which is none of those things existed then. I was forced into the channel of media the way it was because it was the only option. Now it's not, and that's the big surprise. However lousy it is to sit in your basement and pretend to be an elf, I can tell you from personal experience it's worse to sit in your basement and try to figure if Ginger or Mary Ann is cuter.
  • Here's something four-year-olds know: A screen that ships without a mouse ships broken. Here's something four-year-olds know: Media that's targeted at you but doesn't include you may not be worth sitting still for. Those are things that make me believe that this is a one-way change. Because four year olds, the people who are soaking most deeply in the current environment, who won't have to go through the trauma that I have to go through of trying to unlearn a childhood spent watching Gilligan's Island, they just assume that media includes consuming, producing and sharing.

So all that time I spent just watching Get Smart didn't help my Cognitive account. Does it count if I can still recite all the best lines? So your Mr.Big... So your Mr. Smart.

Modern Day Revolution - Horizon Project 2008 - 0 views

  • I agree that in the upcoming generation, my generation, we control our screen instead of watching it as our parents did.
  • Collaboration is not just a word in the dictionary that we have to recite to a chalkboard. It’s something that we have become accustomed to; it is as natural to us as breathing.
  • In the digital age, we do not have to strike in front of the White House. We effect change by telling the world the truth from the comfort of our own homes using the Internet with facebook, myspace, blogger, and so much more.
  •
I'm reading some great posts from students about the keynote. This one in particular was very captivating. In the digital age, we do not have to strike in front of the White House. We effect change by telling the world the truth from the comfort of our own homes using the Internet with facebook, myspace, blogger, and so much more."

Email versus blogging - 0 views

  •
Some backlash against e-mail is beginning to be seen as people realize that the inundations of e-mail is leaving to innefficiency. (This is also true for educational organizations -- too much productivity is being lost in email when we should be creating those reports using wikis and reflecting using blogs.) This lets one see how businesses are realizing that moving from e-mail collaboration to global collaboration using blogs and wikis may just be more efficient - -there are some new studies showing this as well.

Docstoc.com Blog » Embed Documents into your Blog or Website - 0 views

  • You can share and display any document (.doc, .pdf, .xls, .ppt) in your own blog or on any website where you can add embeded codes with the docstoc flash player.
  •
This is a great way to emped all types of documents directly into a blog post -- I'l be teseting this on my blog. This is very cool and is yet another way that people are sharing content. It is less about WHAT is being shared and more just about the fact that we can share it.
  •
This is a website that lets documents be embedded in a web page and is another example of how collaboration is happening.

YouTube - Mathmaticious - 0 views

This mathematicious video took a long time to make. I love it! Math teachers will love this. This is something for the horizon project student to review. This is Funny but it is an example of how videos can be made on any topic -- a math teacher could have students see how many of these terms they recognize.

This is a chart from a well known educator in canada -- if you are interested in learning more about this - I can put you in touch with the author, Darren Kuropatwa.
  •
I likethis graphic from Darren about the traditional classroom. I would tweak it a bit but wanted to preserve this, particularly for the students examining the impact of connecting people and usercontent on the classroom with the horizon project.
