Apparently my simulation idea about having students take on roles as career professionals has already been done. A drove of statistical consultants (the students) are helping the mayor (NPC), get re-elected. The most interesting Worked Example is Modern Prometheus, where students learn about literature and writing through a MUVE.

Wondering if this idea of "Pulling people into education, rather than pushing them into it" can work for the world's "worst-off Children"? Most interesting ideas found in the TED talk here: http://www.good.is/post/education-innovation-in-the-worst-situations/ Q: Are there smart-phone/cell-phone-based MUVE games?

  • "It was funny because the [preference for Second Life] were in the female group, which means the females found the experience more useful than males; that is really interesting because we are working on a game-based approach and we tend to think that games are for boys and not for girls."

It would be interesting to investigate what aspects of the experience appealed to females.

Omosa is a virtual learning environment which helps students to learn ecology and biology. It aims at the current condition that students are having fewer opportunities to go on real field trips and work with real animals. It's cool in helping students learn the biological circle of animals and the environment.

A 3D multi-user environment that immerses children in real-world, socially and academically meaningful activities. Ran across this doing some research for the VPA. It's the richest example on an online learning environment that I've seen, and similar to something I'd envisioned but dismissed as not currently realistic--apparently I was wrong! I would love to give this a test drive.
