This is a really good paper that shows how to evaluate tools for education with learning curves. They use adaptive tutoring systems as an example but it can be applied to just about any educational tool, such as a website, tablet app, and so on. There is some math, but it is very approachable.

To be piloted in New York City schools to get parents more engaged

I would have loved this when I was in the classroom!!! Our principal used to make home visits, but some parents felt this was really intrusive (understandably); this sounds like a great easy & quick to implement intervention.

The iPhone can be a freeing tool for the blind, especially when their needs are addressed through apps designed by blind people.

Even though the products of this company have been ranked highly as an education app, I am unable to see how this game is any different from the drill type computer games that have been around for ages. Am I missing something ? I think there is a need for both clear guidelines and regulation before a product can be claimed to have educational value.

YES...I am engaged! This strikes me as a perfect crossover for entertainment and educational apps.
