The public awareness campaign for community pharmacy, 'Ask Your Pharmacist Week' this year will be on 31 October - 7 November, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has announced. Every year AYP Week is held across the UK, with an aim to raise awareness of pharmacy services and to prompt conversations with key stakeholders at a local level about community pharmacy's role and benefits. If you are a pregnant mother waiting to meet your precious bundle, we congratulate you! Pregnancy is an exciting time and also a time for learning, as many moms-to-be in Katy find out, whether or not they have had kids before. Each pregnancy is different, just as every child is different, and you can never be sure exactly what to expect. However, there are some basic things you can do to ensure that your baby is healthy and to ease the delivery process. What is prenatal care? This is an umbrella term for all the services provided to you by an obstetrician in addition to your care routine at home before the baby is born. The first thing to do when you think you are pregnant is to confirm it through an at-home pregnancy test or a blood test (hCG test). Once your pregnancy is confirmed, you will need to call or visit your doctor so that you can get the essential vitamins. Folic acid, for example, has been proven to consistently reduce neural tube defects in newborns when the mother has taken sufficient amounts of it. It is now advised that all women hoping to get pregnant should start on folic acid early (dosage to be prescribed by your family doctor) and not wait until they are pregnant to take it. Prenatal vitamins are also recommended as a part of prenatal care by obstetricians in Katy around the 8th week of pregnancy. How often should you visit your obstetrician? In the first trimester you will only need to visit every four weeks. The doctor will check your weight and measure the stomach to get an idea of the baby's growth inside. The doctor will also check the heartbeat of the baby. During the third trimester, however, you may need to visit every two weeks and then once a week. At least one ultrasound test will be performed along with a few possible blood tests. For more information visit: Prenatal careImage Source: Google.com

Success Breeds Success: Fed-up Dieters Achieve in 2 Weeks What Normally Takes 2 Months - 0 views

  •
Fruitless diet programs are often a psychological-not physiological-problem. Many diet programs are potentially effective but fail to produce immediate results, causing disheartened dieters to abandon an otherwise rewarding path. Substitute quick, robust losses, and dieters experience optimism rather than demotivation and enjoy continued progress rather than resignation. Nutrition expert and personal trainer Brian Flatt recognized this pattern and created The 2 Week Diet, a new weight loss program that flips the conventional psychology on its head to great effect. Users typically report losing 8-16 pounds in 14 days. "Nothing breeds success like success," said Flatt, who also owns R.E.V. Fitness in Southern California. "Now dieters can see their progress almost immediately, so instead of growing discouraged and bouncing from program to program, they devote sustained energy to their current diet plan." The notion that early success generates more success has been substantiated in a recent study by Arnout van de Rijt, Associate Professor in Stony Brook University's Department of Sociology and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS). He concluded, "Modest initial success may be sufficient to trigger a self-propelling cascade of success in various success-breeds-success scenarios." Flatt applies this wisdom to his system, "When a dieter sees quick results, he or she becomes more engaged. That produces a 'snowball effect': results get better and better as dieters see themselves getting leaner and leaner." On this program, dieters notice favorable body composition changes in the first couple of days. In the first week alone, dieters are likely to see in the neighborhood of 10 pounds of fat stripped from their body. Flatt exults, "Their clothes will be looser, they will feel lighter, and they'll feel 10 times better." His program does much more to help dieters lose as much weight as possible. It corrects the

Covid jabs for 5 and 6 year old kids: NHS - 0 views

  •
In continuation of the NHS Covid vaccine programme, Covid jabs for five and six-year olds will be available at the local vaccination centres or community pharmacies outside of school hours. Following the recent JCVI guidance that recommended all children between 5 and 11 would benefit from a non-urgent offer of the COVID vaccine, the NHS will send invitations to one million families with five and six-year-olds this week. "Invitations being sent to families this week will set out how easy and convenient it is to take up the offer of a vaccine as part of the NHS COVID vaccination programme by booking through the National Booking Service, or visiting their nearest walk-in site," NHS said. Between April 25 and May 1, there are already more than 33,500 children aged five to 11 booked in for their dose of the life-saving vaccine, with a further 50,000 slots still available. Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and Deputy Lead for the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme, said: "It is great to see so many families already booked in for their children to receive their Covid vaccine this week, helping to protect themselves against potential future waves of the virus.

Liver Damage - 0 views

Causes of Liver Damage and Liver Problems The liver is an organ about the size of a football that sits just under your rib cage on the right side of your abdomen. The liver is essential for digesting food and ridding your body of toxic substances. Liver disease can be inherited (genetic) or caused by a variety of factors that damage the liver, such as viruses and alcohol use. Obesity is also associated with liver damage. Regardless of whether it takes place over many years or a few weeks, liver failure is an absolutely devastating health development that, if left untreated, can result in the death of a patient. There are essentially two types of liver failure: acute, which can emerge over the course of a very short period (such as a few weeks or even less), and chronic, which tends to last many years. Although acute and chronic liver failure patients often experience similar symptoms, the causes of these two conditions - in addition to their treatments - can be unique. But, because the end result, death, can be the same, it's crucial that everyone fully understand the causes of all types of liver failure. > Excessive acetaminophen: Many of us reach for acetaminophen - better known as Tylenol, is brand name - at the first sign of minor or moderate pain, like a headache or back pain. Moderna Boss Warns Against Omicron Jab Struggle - 0 views

  •
Existing Covid-19 inoculations will struggle against the fast-spreading Omicron variant, the head of vaccine manufacturer Moderna warned on Tuesday (November 30), as countries ramp up vaccination programmes and impose further restrictions in an effort to curb growing concern. First reported to the World Health Organization in South Africa less than a week ago, the new strain has rapidly spread from Africa to the Pacific, and from Europe to North America as dozens of countries have announced travel restrictions. While no deaths have yet been reported from Omicron, and it could take weeks to know how infectious and how resistant the strain may prove to vaccines, its emergence underscores how besieged the world remains by Covid-19, nearly two years after the first cases were recorded. Stephane Bancel, the head of US vaccine manufacturer Moderna, told the Financial Times in an interview published today that data would be available on the effectiveness of vaccines in the two weeks' time, but that scientists were pessimistic.

Kate Bingham Expects Vaccine Impact To Be Known In A Week - 0 views

  •
Kate Bingham, the former head of the UK's Covid-19 Vaccine Taskforce who secured millions of doses for the country, said scientists should know within a week whether existing shots are effective against the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Bingham, a venture capitalist who backed multiple vaccines at the start of the pandemic to secure early access for Britain, said she currently expected that the leading shots would still show efficacy. "The question is do they have the same level of efficacy?" she said on Wednesday. Bingham, who has returned to her role as managing partner at SV Health Investors, said Britain had built up the capability to quickly test existing vaccines against new variants. "It's not something you can do overnight, but we will get data, I would have thought within a week as to whether or not the vaccines work or don't," she said.

Pharmacy becoming first port of call for healthcare advice - 0 views

  •
The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC)'s 2022 Pharmacy Advice Audit revealed that more than 1.2 million consultations a week - or 65 million a year - are now being carried out by community pharmacy teams in England. This is an increase from 2021, when the audit results suggested that in total pharmacies were providing 58 million consultations per year. PSNC has published the findings of the audit of over 4,000 community pharmacies carried out earlier this year. During the audit, 82,872 informal patient consultations were recorded, with the average pharmacy completing 19 consultations per day. This suggests that more than 1.2 million informal consultations are taking place in community pharmacies in England every week. The audit helped to quantify the number of informal referrals being made to pharmacies by GPs and NHS 111, with 7,774 informal patient referrals into pharmacy coming from these routes; grossed up to a national level that means 117,000 cases per week. These are all referrals that could and should have been made by the NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS).

Community Pharmacy Roundtable summit 21 March - 0 views

  •
Representatives from the national community pharmacy bodies will brief the MPs on the severe challenges facing community pharmacies on Tuesday (21 March) at a roundtable summit. The roundtable summit will include discussions on the urgent action needed to address the current severe challenges being faced by community pharmacy, as well as the sector's role in the upcoming Primary Care Recovery Plan, said PSNC. The Parliamentary event this week has been coordinated by PSNC as part of the joint #SaveOurPharmacies campaign which exceeded 30,000 signatories in a week. The Association of Independent Pharmacies (AIM), the Company Chemists' Association (CCA), the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) and PSNC will take part at the event. A spokesperson for the #SaveOurPharmacies campaign group said: "30,000 signatures in a week indicates a high level of underlying public support for community pharmacy and it's a good start to the #SaveOurPharmacies campaign. A petition by itself won't change the world, but it works as a kind of drumbeat for the campaign, giving forward momentum, and it's a really easy way to express your opinion. We hope the new window poster - along with all the resources available at saveourpharmacies.co.uk - will help as many pharmacies as possible to drum up support from their patients, and we're really grateful to Communications International Group for helping us to print and distribute this.
