A tribunal has ordered Boots to pay over £58,000 in compensation and costs to a pharmacist who was racially profiled at work. S.Famojuro, a black pharmacist of Nigerian national origin, experienced racial harassment from pharmacy team members during a shift on 18 July 2020. The Pharmacists' Defence Association (PDA), the independent trade union for pharmacists, represented the pharmacist throughout the internal grievance processes and at the Employment Tribunal hearing. In a detailed written judgment, the pharmacy team members and company managers were heavily criticised by the Tribunal, after finding that a pre-registration pharmacy technician and a pharmacy advisor had undermined Famojuro in his professional role as the Responsible Pharmacist (RP) and insulted him. The pharmacist lodged a grievance with Boots regarding his treatment, but it took the company over four months to initiate the investigation and set a meeting date, and this was only done after the PDA intervened to address the unacceptable delays.

Reacting to recommendations from a UK-first independent review, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has outlined action to tackle potential bias in the design and use of medical devices. Professor Dame Margaret Whitehead, professor of public health at the University of Liverpool, was appointed to lead the review, which focused on three areas - optical devices such as pulse oximeters, AI-enabled devices, and polygenic risk scores (PRS) in genomics. The DHSC commissioned the medical devices review after concerns were raised that pulse oximeters - widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor blood oxygen levels - were not as accurate for patients with darker skin tones. There were worries that this could cause delays in treatment if dangerously low oxygen levels in such patients were missed. However, no evidence was found from NHS studies indicating that this differing performance had an impact on patient care. Accepting the report's conclusions, the DHSC has committed to several actions, such as ensuring the safe use of pulse oximeter devices across a range of skin tones within the NHS and eliminating racial bias from data sets employed in clinical studies.

Pharmacists from BAME backgrounds still face higher levels of discrimination, harassment, bullying, and career obstacles compared to their white counterparts, the Pharmacy Workforce Race Equality Standard (PWRES) report has revealed. Published by NHSE England, this report underscores the persistent presence of inequality, emphasising the crucial need for all stakeholders in the pharmacy sector to prioritise addressing these issues. The PWRES report indicates that pharmacy team members of Black ethnic backgrounds are less likely to perceive equal opportunities for career advancement or promotion within their trust. Additionally, female pharmacy team members from BAME backgrounds report higher incidents of personal discrimination in the workplace. The report also highlights an overrepresentation of pharmacy technicians from BAME backgrounds in lower-paid roles. "It is shocking and unacceptable to see that across all indicators the BME staff experience is worse than their white counterparts," said Tase Oputu, Chair of RPS in England.

"Britain will always be your home," said Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, in a video message to NHS and care staff in response to recent violence targeting healthcare workers from ethnic minority backgrounds. In the video posted on X, Streeting said: "I have been appalled by recent news reports of violence over the last week directed towards Filipino nurses in Sunderland, GPS closing early out of fear of riots and the torching of a Nigerian care worker's car. "These people are there for our country when we need them. They look after us at our most vulnerable and bust a gut to keep us well. Their attackers bring shame on our nation and our flag." Streeting underscored that the government will not tolerate NHS or social care staff being subjected to intimidation, harassment or racist abuse.

A snap survey conducted by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) revealed that over half of community pharmacy teams have felt unsafe in the past week due to ongoing riots across the country. The survey, which included responses from approximately 350 community pharmacies, also found that one in three pharmacies had considered closing because of safety concerns, while 13 per cent of pharmacy teams reported experiencing racist comments during this period. According to the NPA, over 40 per cent of pharmacists are of South Asian, Black, or other ethnic minority backgrounds, with the majority of independent community pharmacy owners believed to be of South Asian heritage. The association reports that businesses had been vandalised during the riots, leading some pharmacies to reduce their opening hours or close entirely, following advice from the police and local authorities. Despite a recent decline in disorder over the last few days, police have been advised to remain on high alert over the weekend.
