A pharmacist in a leading independent pharmacy chain shares his myth-busting Ramadan advice on managing health and the use of medication while fasting. While the holy month means total fasting in terms of oral consumption, it's still ok, says Ifti Khan, superintendent pharmacist at Well Pharmacy, to have vaccinations and blood tests and to use eye drops or other medical items that are not ingested through the mouth. It's also important for people to keep taking their prescribed medication over the Ramadan period. Anyone who is concerned should speak to their pharmacist about whether they can take their medicine at different times, as stopping it could have serious consequences. Mr Khan, who will be observing Ramadan himself, said: "Confusion can sometimes arise when it comes to medication and managing health conditions whilst fasting", adding it is important for patients to keep managing health during Ramadan. Having injections or vaccinations is fine, as are blood tests, using eye or ear drops, and using anything that patients don't consume orally - so nicotine and other transdermal patches, pessaries and dialysis, for example. It's also ok to eat and drink as a result of a condition which causes forgetfulness.

The drug, alpelisib, which is the 100th cancer drug that has being fast-tracked to patients under the NHS Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) will be used in combination with the hormone therapy, fulvestrant, to target the gene that causes fast-growing tumours. Up to 3,000 people a year with a certain type of secondary breast cancer will benefit from the treatment. The approach has contributed to people in England having access to nearly one third more cancer drugs compared to the European average. The drug which is manufactured by pharmaceutical company Novartis, is part of a growing number of precision treatments that target a tumour based on mutations in its DNA and that the NHS is rolling out. John Stewart, NHS National Director for Specialised Commissioning said, "In just over five years, more than 80,000 people have benefitted from earlier access to a range of cancer drugs, with people in England having access to nearly one third more cancer drugs compared to the European average, and this latest innovative new treatment will help up to 3,000 more to live a better quality of life.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) launched a new Innovative Medicines Fund on Tuesday (June 7) under which £340 million has been made available to purchase potentially life-saving drugs early. It often takes longer for pharmaceutical companies to collect data on a medicine's clinical and cost effectiveness for rare diseases due to the smaller patient cohort.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has on Friday approved leniolisib phosphate (Joenja) to treat a rare immune disease known as activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome or APDS in adults and adolescents aged 12-years-old and older who weigh 45kg or more. The medicine was approved via a fast-track approval process for medicines, known as the International Recognition Procedure (IRP), which allows the MHRA to consider the expertise and decision-making of trusted regulatory partners for the benefit of UK patients. The decision follows an approval for the drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is the first time the MHRA has approved a new medicine following FDA approval. The MHRA said it considered the assessment made by the US regulator as part of its own review, facilitating a rapid approval process. APDS is an inherited disorder where the patient is unable to fight infections because the immune system does not work properly. A pharmacist based in the East Midlands of England plans to run 150 kilometres during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to raise funds for an international food charity. Shahid Akhtar from Rainworth, Nottinghamshire started running five kilometres each day from March 23 "from about an hour before sunset and the time I can break my fast." So far, the 50-year-old locum pharmacist who used "to own and run a community pharmacy not so long ago", has managed to run 55 kilometres and has already raised a total of £2,173 for the cause. NHS England has launched the first major update to the 'Act FAST' campaign since 2009, as new data reveals that many stroke patients wait almost an hour and a half on average before making an emergency call. The updated campaign urges the public to call 999 immediately if anyone experiences one of the three common stroke symptoms: difficulty smiling (Face), trouble raising an arm (Arms), or slurred speech (Speech). Around 100,000 people are estimated to suffer a stroke each year in the UK, which occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Strokes remain the fourth single leading cause of death in the UK, resulting in about 38,000 deaths each year. An analysis of NHS data for 2023-24 indicated that among 41,327 patients with a recorded time of symptom onset, the average time from the first symptom to making a 999 call was 88 minutes. Additionally, a poll of 2,001 adults in England revealed that 57 per cent of respondents believed you should have 2-3 symptoms of a stroke before calling 999, despite the fact that even one symptom is a sign of a medical emergency.

Thousands of cancer patients in England are set to gain fast-tracked access to personalised cancer vaccine trials through a new National Health Service(NHS) initiative, the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad. The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has supported the Department of Health and Social Care's recommendation to 'aggressively expedite and roll out new medicines' that have gone through trials. The ABPI welcomes government report on cancer services in England and the opportunity it provides to refocus how the pharmaceutical industry, NHS and government can improve the lives of cancer patients. David Watson, executive director, Patient Access at the ABPI, said: "Despite progress, UK patients still have much worse five-year survival rates for many cancers than those in similar nations.
