We need to normalize breastfeeding in our society. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. The more we see the benefits and see mothers continuing to breastfeed, the more socially normal it will become. I am proud to call Jamie Grumet a friend of mine. Title: Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 Months Best for Babies Everywhere Author: No Author (World Health Organization) Date Published: 15 January 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This statement from the WHO recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for 6 months (no supplementation) based on the evidence from a recent 2009 study. The WHO also recommends that infants/toddlers continue to be breastfed for two years or more. The statement also covers some of the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. The more we see the benefits and see mothers continuing to breastfeed, the more socially normal it will become. Credibility of Source: The World Health Organization is credible and bases it's statements off of research findings.

Title:Pregnancy, Birth, and Medicine Author: Rebecca Kukla, Catherine Wayne Date:February 17, 2011 Why Relevant to Summary: This is relevant to my summary because it talks about the ways of birth as well as pregnancy per and postnatal and it talks about medicine which ones are good and which ones are not. How this Influenced My Thinking: This made me realize that there is more about being pregnant and giving birth than just flowers and chocolates. It made me realize that I still have a lot to learn: credibility:it from the encyclopedia of philosophy in Standford University.

It especially highlights its capabilities to stop disease and build up the immune system. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me more scientifically understand why breast milk helps build up our immune systems with the antibodies, white blood cells, etc. Credibility of Source: healthy children's website seems reliable.

It covers both biological and cultural aspects. How This Influenced My Thinking: I never thought about how the lack of breastfeeding in the family would influence a new mom. Credibility of Source: The La Leche League is the Pro-Breastfeeding place to go. I find this source extremely credible.

It compares these benefits to pregnancies using technology and drugs which I thought was helpful. How This Influenced My Thinking: I always thought I would do pregnancy with drugs, but after researching and reading this article I am considering natural childbirth! Credibility of Source: The article has an author and date so it shoudl be pretty reliable. It also has references to ferer back to.

Costello, Monica Contreras c , Magda Magris, Glida Hidalgo, Noah Fierer, and Rob Knight Date Published: May 24, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it compares to modes of birth delivery: cesarean section and vaginal delivery. This article compares the types of microbes that inhabit a newborn's skin after birth. It looks at newborns born via cesarean section and vaginal. How This Influenced My Thinking: It provided a more quantifiable way to measure and compare cesarean section and vaginal birth because I still do not have a strong opinion as to how I would personally choose to have my children. Title: Natural Childbirth & Waterbirth Facts, Benefits for Mom & Baby Author: Marie Black- Holistic Life Coach Date Published: Uploaded August 4th 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Insightful information about benefits and concerns of the waterbirth method of childbirth. How This Influenced My Thinking: Good points on benefits of waterbirth, she was able to give me more information on my concerns as well as suggestions for research. Credibility of Source: very credible information and citing of sources.

Author: No Author Date Published: December 7, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This blog is very helpful because it explains the Bronfenbrenner's Theory in detail. It also gives examples of the five different concepts and applies it to adolescent's behavior. How This Influenced My Thinking: This blog helped me make the relationship between the five stages not only a child's perspective but in an adolescents perspective. Credibility of Source: I wouldn't call this blog very credible but it gives good examples of the five concepts of the theory.

Author: Kid's Health Date Published: Last Updated 10/12 Why Relevant and Summary: This website gives an explanation of how early puberty is seen in today's children. It goes into detail on the consequences of starting puberty at a young age, such as engaging in risky behavior and in growth problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website definitely made me aware of how children as young as seven are starting puberty. As a kid one usually looks up to kids who have a deep voice or girls who develop breast early, and this website made me realize that those kids whom everyone admires, are at risk of having health problems later on in life. Credibility of Source: This website seems to be credible because it does give a lot of information about kids health, and it was also reviewed by a M.D.

How this influenced my thinking: This really explained how important it is to make sure co-sleeping is right for both you and your significant other. Title:12 Ways to Give Birth Author:BabyZone Editors Date: nd Why relevant and summary: this website gives the reader 12 different ways of childbirth and briefly summarizes them. Although its helpful when deciding on what types of childbirths to use it does not go into too much detail about each of the methods.

It is relevant to "child birth and culture" because it goes over different methods of birth that not only American cultures use, but other cultures as well. There is a lot of interesting information that is provided in the website and it's also very insightful. author: Baby zone editors Date published: ND How this influenced my thinking: This article really opened my eyes to various types of child birth and the pros and cons that each one has. I had never really considered any other type of birth besides medicated birth in a hospital, but it was very interesting to read about the benefits of water birth. Credibility of source: The source seems to be credible. It was written by the editors of Disney.

Title: Methods of Childbirth Author: Web M.d Date Published:n.d Why Relevant and Summary: This website shows an overview of the most common form of labor and delivery. It gives examples of methods use to deliver a baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Although i was aware of this form of childbirth method, I was not aware of the terminology that doctors use, and how complex childbirth actually is. It has open my eyes to the variety of methods. Credibility of Source: This source was somewhat credible. This website is useful if wanting to get an overview of the topic or if one is new to topic. This source is a good way to begin with research, however more extensive research should be done.

Title: Cultural differences among birthing women Author: Brenda Lane Date Published:2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Informative article that explains cultural differences in the birthing process including support system and who is involved in the process. Gives great examples across different cultures. How This Influenced My Thinking: Made me realize that there are different views on how a child should be birthed i always thought that the father has to be present no matter what in the process. This is not the case among people of other cultures. Credibility of Source: Medium.

Date Published: Nov. 2003 Why Relevant and Summary: This study and other publications by DiPietro show an amazing knowledge of fetal development and the stress reaction from the fetus when mom is stressed. DiPietro also has done work with mother and the fetus bonding during pregnancy. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have 3 kids so nothing he said actually surprised me. Credibility of Source: Very Credible

Date Published: Dec 21, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: Where a baby sleeps is not as simple as current medical discourse and recommendations against cosleeping in some western societies want it to be. (McKenna) Cosleeping is often the subject of pediatric controversy, but really it makes sense biologically that it is much healthier for babies to cosleep with parents (unless parents are smoking, drinking heavily or using drugs.) How This Influenced My Thinking: I naturally fell into cosleeping with my babies and still have an open door policy. At 6 and 4, my girls often crawl into my bed during the night. I feel that this promotes bonding and security. Credibility of Source: Neuroanthropology seems credible
