Balance scales by using blobs. Using unit ratios, such as 1:3, 2: 1 or 1:4, explore how many black blobs and white blobs balance each other. Discover the rule that balances the scales with the correct number and type of blobs. For example, 2 black blobs balance 1 white blob. Find out how many black blobs balance 2 white blobs. Build a number pattern. Then use the rule to solve a problem by moving blobs to make the scales balance. This learning object is the first in a series of three learning objects.

This learning object is a combination of three objects in the same series. Students identify that one item can be used to represent a value of more than one. Students predict the numerical relationship (ratio) between two or three types of items. Students analyse number sentences and record the equivalent relations.

There are five levels to work through. In level 1 you simply type in the number of children to share the pizza and the pizza will be cut into fractions for you. At Level 2 you drag fractions to complete a fraction wall. In Level 3 you have to count the number of shaded squares and the total number of squares then type in the fraction (use a slash e.g. 1/4). Level 4 introduces a fraction numberline for you to drag the fractions onto. Level 5 uses a pizza to illustrate fraction equivalences.

Could be used for a range of activities. Select letters and students could make words with those letters, or set task how many words can you make with a 'tion' ending for example. Words can be sent to and stored in a wordbank once created.
