Z250 - Latin & Greek Roots Index - 0 views

  •
This website may help students understand the parts (e.g. prefix) of many vocabulary words. Many technical terms, names of biological structures, and names of taxa, are formed from Greek and Latin roots. If you are familiar with these roots, you can 'translate' the technical terms into English. One particularly useful example is the names of taxa. The formal taxonomic names for many animal groups (from phylum down to species) are often formed from roots that refer to distinctive features of the animals. When used in pairs, such as in the familiar Latin binomials for genus and species, both the genus and species names are often descriptive.

This site is for teachers wanting to promote strong study skills in their classrooms. They have lots of information on the home page and will send out a free digital copy of their program. However, they really want you to sign up and pay for the whole thing. It's a web-based program designed to help struggling students work on their skills at school and from home. Worth a look.
