This probably isn't really "news", as this was coming...but still...it's arrived.

ZDNet's Rupert Goodwins is going blind . Most of us will lose a substantial fraction of our visual acuity, should we live long enough. As a service to his readers, Goodwins is documenting the way that technology can be adapted for people with visual disabilities.

Update: Though it still seems like a strong possibility that publisher demands are behind this, several commenters and other sources have pointed out that it's just as likely to have been Amazon's decision. We mistakenly stated that Amazon implied they were acting at the publishers' behest, but that was a misreading of the quote from Findings and has been corrected.

As we're unlikely to be actually designing many of the UI for publishing apps ourselves, it's never a bad idea to have this in the back of your mind when speaking with your design firm/vendor/department at the start of a project. Especially, with the growth of smartphones, mid-sized and larger sized tablet devices.

Short-form publishing is becoming more popular as the financial impracticalities of publishing something at this length become a moot point, thanks to the digital era.

Wal-Mart says adios to selling the Kindle in-store.

Interesting...ebook sales are up compared with last year, but physical books seem unaffected according to this report. 

The Kindle isn't only for reading. It's for selling non-book stuff on Amazon, too. And Walmart doesn't like that.

Crowdfunded ebook operation that is just releasing it's first "unglued" edition, that is, not proprietary to any device and free to all who want to download it.  What's cool about Unglue.it is that they're attempting to raise money for specific publishing projects to compensate authors, and get their work out to anyone who can download it.  It's early and success is not guaranteed, but it's a cool idea!

This author is using Google Drive/Docs to write and edit her book for everyone to see.

Stephen Marche rebels against digital formats (sort of) by creating an interior layout that can't possibly be read on a device...not sure I agree... but it's an interesting look at an author seeing books as art.  That I can agree with.
