Writers Need To Stop Complaining About Amazon Making Books Cheaper - 1 views

  •
Amazon started life as a book retailer, and as a book retailer they made books cheaper. Then they were pioneers in the e-book industry where they made books cheaper. Their recently announced plan to give readers free e-book copies of books they buy in physical form doesn't make books cheaper per se, but it does give readers greater value for their book-buying dollar. This is all great stuff. But not everyone agrees. Emily Gould complains that "When ebooks and pbooks are bundled, the ebooks are sold at a loss. That's authors', publishers' and, associatively, non-AMZN retailers' loss" and "frustrating we have to keep explaining that ebook production is not free. digital objects are not made by elves."

Getting Google to notice your ebook - 0 views

  • but Google eBookstore suddenly gives booksellers a reason to at least wade into SEO.
  • But what about new books and ebooks? How does Google determine which new titles, and the more than 15 million books that have been scanned, float to the top of its search results pages: in the web search box and in the ebookstore. The challenge, for Gray and other Google engineers on the Books project, is that the best known component of Google's algorithm for determining the the value of a web resource -- the number of links to it by others -- does not apply to books and ebooks. Although it is possible to link to a selection in certain books on Google Books (here's a hyperlink into the aforementioned Galbraith title) people don't generally create links to the contents of a book or ebook. So linking is not a reliable indicator of quality.
  • One strategy that Google employs is to tap into the book industry's "rich tradition of metadata.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Google also looks at what Gray referred to as "market signals:" how often a book has been reprinted, web searches, recent book sales, the number of libraries that hold the book, etc.
  • 3 best practices for getting Google to notice your book
  • 1. Use descriptive titles and chapter headings
  • 2. Create quality content outside the book
  • 3. Book covers matter
  •
With the opening of the Google Bookstore, it's time for publishers to start thinking about search engine optimization (SEO)

Selling Books by Their Gilded Covers - 1 views

  •
Many new releases have design elements usually reserved for special occasions - deckle edges, colored endpapers, high-quality paper and exquisite jackets that push the creative boundaries of bookmaking. If e-books are about ease and expedience, the publishers reason, then print books need to be about physical beauty and the pleasures of owning, not just reading.

  •
Though e-books are rising in popularity, print remains the foundation of Americans' reading habits. Most people who read e-books also read print books, and just 4% of readers are "e-book only." Audiobook listeners have the most diverse reading habits overall, while fewer print readers consume books in other formats.

Books in the Age of the iPad - Craig Mod - 1 views

  • I want to look at where printed books stand in respect to digital publishing, why we historically haven't read long-form text on screens and how the iPad is wedging itself in the middle of everything. In doing so I think we can find the line in the sand to define when content should be printed or digitized. This is a conversation for books-makers, web-heads, content-creators, authors and designers. For people who love beautifully made things. And for the storytellers who are willing to take risks and want to consider the most appropriate shape and media for their yarns

Questia Library Plus iPhone app. Credit: Questia We'll spare you the obvious "there's an app for that" joke. But you can get a library's worth of books on your phone. Questia, an online research portal for students, announced its application today for reading books, articles and periodicals on an iPhone or iPod Touch. The app costs 99 cents for 5,000 public-domain books and a week of unlimited access. After that, users can buy a two-week subscription for $9.99. There are so many things wrong with this we don't know where to start. For one, students don't like to buy things....

Little e, Big B: Books and EBooks and Love and War - 0 views

  •
Interesting opinion piece from an author who has written both ebooks and books, and crowdfunded a book, and done all sorts of neat things from a publishing angle, calling for a "back to the content" sort of movement. Not sure what I think of this, but thought it was worth pushing out to you all since I know for a lot of us, a love of books is what got us into this field to begin with.

Picture Books Languish as Parents Push 'Big-Kid Books' - 2 views

  • Now Laurence is 6 ½, and while he regularly tackles 80-page chapter books, he is still a “reluctant reader,” Ms. Gignac said. Sometimes, she said, he tries to go back to picture books. “He would still read picture books now if we let him, because he doesn’t want to work to read,” she said, adding that she and her husband have kept him reading chapter books.
