My Journey for Sustainable Food | 3BL Media - 1 views

  •
Last winter, my husband Dan and I noticed we were beginning to struggle in our quest for fresh, local food. As a Californian learning to endure my first Boston winter, I wanted more variety in our produce. At the same time Dan, a culinary school student, was learning more and more about the role of things like corn syrup and stabilizers in processed food. Between the two of us, we often ended up wondering what we could do to ensure that what we put into our bodies was healthy, fresh and ultimately unprocessed. So we took up cooking more and expanded our repertoire to include items like homemade bread, chicken stock, ice cream and others. Still, in hindsight we relied more often than we would have liked on cheap meat, poultry and dairy - often because it was what we could afford.

5 Things You Should Know about Green Cleaning | Clean Calculator Cleaning Industry % - 0 views

  •
"Green cleaning is a phrase you've likely heard more often over the years. While the term clearly suggests using environmentally-friendly products over conventional cleaning solutions, what does this trend mean for janitorial services?   The idea that cleaning companies should be mindful of their environmental impact is not a new one, but it hasn't yet been fully implemented in the janitorial industry. The prevalence of green cleaning is growing significantly; this is not a temporary trend in the janitorial market, but a way for cleaning businesses to improve and innovate their service offerings.   What do you need to know about green cleaning in the market today? Here are 5 fast facts about eco-friendly cleaning practices:   Green cleaning products are typically lower in cost than their conventional alternatives.   Green cleaners, contrary to common misconception, cost less than conventional cleaners over time. This is mainly because green cleaning products are potent and condensed, allowing you to use less product while achieving the same result. Research has proven that companies who implement green cleaning products experience less employee illness and injury.   Conventional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals that may result in irritation of the eyes, throat, and nose. Harsh chemical cleaners can also trigger headaches. The health of janitors and other employees who are in frequent contact with cleaning products is at risk if harsh chemicals are present in the products.   The desire among consumers for environmentally-friendly cleaning products and services is rising quickly. There is more information available to consumers than ever about conventional chemicals and the harm they may cause, both to the environment and people's health. As such, more and more consumers are seeking cleaning businesses that offer green products and services. Cleaning companies will need to implement green cleaning solutions to keep up with consum

Tuesday Tract: Should We Be Transparent About Transparency? - 0 views

  •
To "refresh your recollection" (I am a former lawyer, after all), let me take you back. Good Guide is a beta site that rates products on three scales: environmental, nutritional, and social justice (my terms, not theirs). They reduce a product and its producer to three numerical scores, with 10 being the top score. Then they combine the three scores to a single score purporting to rate a product/producer overall. More than a month ago, I wrote to Good Guide through its website asking for help in understanding how it could rate a commercial "lite" yogurt (Yoplait) with all its additives, so much higher than an organic, plain whole milk (Straus) made from nothing more than organic whole milk and live yogurt cultures, and higher than an organic nonfat plain (Nancy's) made from nothing more than organic nonfat milk and live yogurt cultures.

George Washington, First Composter-in-Chief of the United States of America | 3BL Media - 0 views

  •
Well, maybe not as macho a title as Commander-In-Chief, but a lot more earth friendly. George Washington was a "scientific" farmer of his day, and absolutely loved it. He introduced the mule, which fertilizes as it plows, into American agriculture. He planted many of his own trees by hand, which is remarkable given that he had over 300 slaves. He even had compostable teeth-made of wood.

We studies dozens of companies during our four years of research. A few have not evolved in their thinking since the 1970s. They are still grousing about legislation and complying with it grudgingly. Others have begun to see the business opportunities in going "beyond compliance." A few have embarked on bold new initiatives to provide solutions to the world's environmental ills-like GE's plan to sell renewable energy, efficient power generation, water purification, and much more.
