A press release published by Creative Commons, January 20 2011. As part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program (TAACCCT), over $2 billion will be invested over the next four years, part of the program to support President Obama's goal of increasing college graduates by 2020. This program is of interest to Creative Commons because all such projects must be released using a Creative Commons attribution (CC BY) license.

Laackman) of the City Colleges of Chicago "will be forced to reapply for their jobs if they want to keep them,and they must commit to achieving higher student-success rates if they are reappointed...." According to the article, "just 7 percent of City College students who require remediation go on to earn a degree...."

University of Massachusetts Amherst is announcing a "new effort to recruit community college graduates to the state university's flagship campus." According to the article, there is already a state policy in place guaranteeing admission to most community college graduates who earn a 2.5 GPA and waiving tuition to those with a 3.0. This new effort will also offer priority registration and housing, as well as scholarships and special advising.

By Mike Rose, The New Press: 2012. In this book, Rose looks specifically at the non-traditional students of community colleges, what their needs are, and how community colleges might serve them better. Rose is a popular education writer who frequently writes on basic skills and remediation.

Editorial from The New York Times, February 18 2013. This editorial points out the pitfalls of online college, identifying student attrition rates (in online courses) and the extra attention that "struggling" students need. The Times advocates for hybrid courses, as well as improving course design for any courses that are delivered 100% online.

JN uses a summary of this book and it's follow-up study with her students, to help them to think critically and to understand that learning is supposed to be hard and to manage their expectations about good grades.

This guide, prepared by Lawrence McEnerney and Joseph M. Williams of the University of Chicago, aims to help students understand what college writing is (or should be). It's easy-to-read tone guides students through the writing process, from understanding what an argument is, to some suggestions about when (and how) to seek out a writing tutor.

This edition of UPDATE focuses on partnerships, beginning with an interview with Dr. Gene Bottoms, founder of High Schools That Work (HSTW). Dr. Bottoms provides important insights into the ways partnerships were used to create HSTW, as well as the ways they are necessary to involving high schools and community colleges in the implementation of Programs of Study. This volume also includes two invited articles, one by Dr. Pamela Eddy, College of William and Mary University, and Dr. Marilyn Amey, Michigan State University, that give OCCRL readers a glimpse into their new book on partnerships and collaboration, and a second by Dr. Louise Yarnell, who shares a model that she and her colleagues at SRI are developing for the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Central Piedmont Community College developed an Online Student Portal learning system to improve retention among its students. They have had success with the system (in use 2004-2008). Now, with a Next Gen grant, they will roll the system out to 6 additional local schools to see if they can match the retention improvements. The system is based both on learning styles and on frequent intervention by students and counselors.

Budget cuts to community colleges highlights the fact that as a society we were never fully committed to remedial students in the first place. Young people and adults who have been criminalized and imprisoned are ineligible for loans, and cannot afford college to turn their life around. These cuts target the working poor, undereducated, and disadvantaged and are a threat to our democracy.

Democracy is dependent on educating those students who require developmental education. Funding dev ed is a moral and social issue, not just an educational one.
