Understanding Your Ancestors - 0 views

  •
The goal of this site is not to help you find your ancestors' names (although the Records section does contain a lot of how-to information). Instead, this site's goal is to help you understand your ancestors' lives - particularly those who lived in the 1700 and 1800s in Western Europe. For grandparents and even great-grandparents, you can often learn quite a bit about their lives by talking to people who knew them. However, once you get back several generations, the task becomes more involved. In most cases, the only evidence of these ancestors that survives is names and dates in basic records. Despite the lack of detail about your ancestors individually, there is a lot of information that can help you understand your ancestors' lives. By accessing this, you can gain important insights into their daily routines and most important life events. To find this information you have to do two things: first, look deeper into the records and second, look beyond your ancestor. I hope this site can help you do both of these.

  •
The Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy is located in the The New York Public Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Library. The Milstein Division collects materials documenting American History on the national, state and local level, Genealogy, Heraldry, Personal and Family Names, and Flags. The Milstein Division bears the responsibility for maintaining the excellence of a body of materials that has traditionally been one of the strengths of The Research Libraries. The Astor Library's holdings of United States history on the national, state and local level were enriched by the acquisition of the George Bancroft Collection, purchased by the Lenox Library. Later significant additions were the Ford, Emmet and Myers Collections. Complementary holdings in the Rare Books and Manuscripts & Archives Division, the Print Room and other divisions of The Research Libraries enhance the resources of The Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy.

Written by Leslie A. Lennox, Lt. Col USAF (Ret), this article provides a fascinating look at the logistical effort involved in assembling 1200 bombers to carry out a strike on Germany. This article has little genealogical information, but should be read by anyone whose father or grandfather was involved in this effort.

Ellis Island Photographs - Flickr Commons New York Public Library - 0 views

  •
"Many photographers were drawn to Ellis Island by the general human interest and newsworthiness of the scene; others, such as pioneering social photographer Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940), responded to the individual humanity of the immigrants' raw eagerness, symbolized for Hine by their humble possessions and their stoicism."

Groklaw - US District Court: Restoration of Copyright in Public Domain Foreign Works Is... - 0 views

  •
This is major: a Federal District Court in Colorado has held unconstitutional a portion of the Copyright Act, holding that 17 U.S.C. §104A, which restored copyright in certain foreign works that had previously fallen into the public domain, cannot survive First Amendment scrutiny. The government defended the statute by arguing that such restoration was required by Article 18 of the Berne Convention, the international copyright treaty that the US joined in 1988, but the court in Golan v. Holder today held that the First Amendment trumps such treaty obligations, and that the statute impermissibly interferes with the free speech rights of the plaintiffs, "artisans and businesses that rely upon works in the public domain for their trade."

"Millions of brides indexed from genealogy files on other web sites. This site may be useful in "brick wall" situations to learn where an ancestor's sister went. Also be sure to check http://GedcomIndex.com, also by this webmaster, for a town-by-town listing of GEDCOM entries and a further explanation of GEDCOM files."
