Understanding Your Ancestors - 0 views

  •
The goal of this site is not to help you find your ancestors' names (although the Records section does contain a lot of how-to information). Instead, this site's goal is to help you understand your ancestors' lives - particularly those who lived in the 1700 and 1800s in Western Europe. For grandparents and even great-grandparents, you can often learn quite a bit about their lives by talking to people who knew them. However, once you get back several generations, the task becomes more involved. In most cases, the only evidence of these ancestors that survives is names and dates in basic records. Despite the lack of detail about your ancestors individually, there is a lot of information that can help you understand your ancestors' lives. By accessing this, you can gain important insights into their daily routines and most important life events. To find this information you have to do two things: first, look deeper into the records and second, look beyond your ancestor. I hope this site can help you do both of these.

"Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data for the free use of all researchers. We've just completed our THIRD YEAR of providing data for states other than Illinois and we're very grateful for the wonderful words of encouragement we've received from researchers. We are also pleased to welcome our new hosts, who have joined our original Illinois volunteers in bringing free transcribed data for you to view on our websites. ll counties within all the states are now online with websites of their own, and we will be working hard to start filling those sites with newly transcribed data."

How Much Is That? | EH.Net - 0 views

  •
    From RootsWeb:

So you just found your ancestor on the 1860 census, and you see the
value of his personal estate listed as $500. "That's great," you
think, "but how much is that today?"

A site called Economic History can help you figure that out. Use their
calculators and other resources to get an idea of whether your
ancestor was a prince or a pauper.
