The goal of this site is not to help you find your ancestors' names (although the Records section does contain a lot of how-to information). Instead, this site's goal is to help you understand your ancestors' lives - particularly those who lived in the 1700 and 1800s in Western Europe. For grandparents and even great-grandparents, you can often learn quite a bit about their lives by talking to people who knew them. However, once you get back several generations, the task becomes more involved. In most cases, the only evidence of these ancestors that survives is names and dates in basic records. Despite the lack of detail about your ancestors individually, there is a lot of information that can help you understand your ancestors' lives. By accessing this, you can gain important insights into their daily routines and most important life events. To find this information you have to do two things: first, look deeper into the records and second, look beyond your ancestor. I hope this site can help you do both of these.

The European Library is a free service that offers access to the resources of the 47 national libraries of Europe in 20 languages. Resources can be both digital or bibliographical (books, posters, maps, sound recordings, videos, etc.). Currently The European Library gives access to 150 million entries across Europe. The amount of referenced digital collections is constantly increasing. Quality and reliability are guaranteed by the 47 collaborating national libraries of Europe. The European Library is a non-commercial organisation.

The University of Florida Digital Collections (UFDC) is a research tool that enables a user to find unique and rare digitized materials held at the University of Florida (UF) and partner institutions. With UFDC, remote and local reserarchers can learn about holdings in a physical collection and receive open access to the online full content of the resource. This is a constantly growing collection of resources. The UFDC offers at least thirty collections grouped into several major headings including: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Science and Technology; Maps; Florida; and World. In addition, the UFDC links to external collections through the Publication of Archival Library Museum Materials.

"This newspaper holds so much history and information and is a valuable resource for our community. Having it available online makes it more easily accessible for everyone," Cr Natoli said. The Nambour Chronicle was the local newspaper for the Sunshine Coast from 1903 until 1980 when the Sunshine Coast Daily was born. The Chronicle from that period no longer exists in hard copy, but its microfilm version is a valuable research resource for the history, culture and development of the region. "Unfortunately, constant usage has damaged the microfilm copies of the Chronicle, which are held in Maroochy and Caloundra libraries. It was a decision between maintaining the old films or digitising,'' Cr Natoli said.

The Rocky Mountain Online Archive (RMOA) is a source of information about archival collections in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Twenty participating institutions are expanding access to their collections by participating in RMOA. Finding aids to collections located in all three states can be accessed on this site to help scholars, researchers and educators discover source materials relevant to their studies.

Publication of Archival, Library & Museum Materials (PALMM) is a cooperative initiative of the public universities of Florida to provide digital access to important source materials for research and scholarship. PALMM projects may involve a single university or may be collaborative efforts between a university and partners within or outside of the state university system. NARA Access to Archival Databases

The Michigan County Histories and Atlases Digitization Project is comprised of 428 digitized titles (many composed of multiple volumes) published before 1923. The collection offers all members of the community free keyword searching and page-by-page access to digitized reproductions of Michigan county histories and atlases as a resource for historical and genealogical research.

The LOUISiana Digital Library (LDL) is an online library of over 84,000 digital materials about Louisiana's history, culture, places, and people. Its purpose is to make unique historical treasures from Louisiana's archives, libraries, museums, and other repositories in the state electronically accessible to Louisiana residents and to students, researchers, and the general public in other states and countries. The LOUISiana Digital Library contains photographs, maps, manuscript materials, books, oral histories, and more that document Louisiana's history and culture.

This guide is designed to help you find out what state census records are available. We have limited the scope of this listing to include only those major sources that were generally designed by the state (or pre-state) government as a census of inhabitants and are readily accessible.
