Library CDs capture GH history It is now possible for Loutit District Library patrons to hear stories of what life was like in the Grand Haven area in the early 20th century in the words of local citizens. Loutit District Library received $16,314 from the Library of Michigan's Digitization for Preservation and Access grant program to preserve in digital form interviews with Grand Haven area citizens recorded by local historian Dr. David Seibold and others. The CDs can be checked out at the library. The project was developed in cooperation with the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. Museum volunteers conducted interviews from the late 1970s through the early 1900s to preserve first-hand recollections of life in the area. Very few of the people whose voices were captured on tape are still living. Among those available is an interview with Ray O'Malley, a survivor of the sinking of the Escanaba, who died recently. There are more than 100 CD-ROMs with more than 6,600 minutes of interviews. In addition, more than 50 interviews were transcribed and can be searched by keyword or printed. Each of the CD-ROMs includes historical photographs from the library's collection. Patrons can listen to the interviews and view the photographs at the library or check out a CD-ROM, which can be accessed on their personal computers. Beginning in June, these materials will be available on the library's Web site, www.loutitlilbrary.org, along with many other local history and genealogy resources.

$2 Million Sloan Foundation Grant To Help Digitize Thousands of Books Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today announced that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded the Library of Congress a $2 million grant for a program to digitize thousands of public-domain works, with a major focus on at-risk "brittle books" and U.S. history volumes. The project, "Digitizing American Imprints at the Library of Congress," will include not only the scanning of volumes, but also the development of suitable page-turner display technology, capability to scan and display foldouts, and a pilot program to capture high-level metadata, such as table of contents, chapters/sections and index. Past digitization projects have shied away from brittle books because of the condition of the materials, but "Digitizing American Imprints" intends to serve as a demonstration project of best practices for the handling and scanning of such vulnerable works.

The AMNH Digital Library was launched in 1999 to develop an integrated database of library resources and natural history collections. The digital library will enable scientists, scholars, and educators working anywhere in the world to study unique and rare research materials from the Museum's Library and scientific collections.

The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) is a distributed digital library with collections of georeferenced materials. ADL includes the operational library, with various nodes and collections, and the research program through which digital library architectures, gazetteer applications, educational applications, and software components are modeled, prototyped, and evaluated. ADL provides HTML clients to access its collections and gazetteer, and provides specific information management tools, such as the Feature Type Thesaurus for classing types of geographic features, as well as downloadable software code.

The Digital & Multimedia Center of the Michigan State University Libraries serves both the MSU community and the world-wide academic community through digitization projects that preserve scholarly resources and make them more widely available. The G. Robert Vincent Voice Library is the largest academic voice library in the nation. It houses taped utterances (speeches, performances, lectures, interviews, broadcasts, etc) by over 50,000 persons from all walks of life recorded over 100 years.

NYPL Digital is your gateway to The Library's rare and unique collections in digitized form. NYPL Digital includes searchable databases like In Motion: The African American Migration Experience and NYPL Digital Gallery, online exhibitions such as Before Victoria, text from the Yizkor (Holocaust Memorial) Books, and more.

University at Buffalo interdisciplinary multi-media digital collections. UBdigit collections support the research and instructional needs of the UB community. UBdigit provides centralized access to UB’s diverse inventory of legacy and teaching collections for purposes of instruction, scholarship, and archival preservation. UBdigit includes primarily collections of still images, but anticipates future inclusion of a variety of digital media formats, including audio, video, kinetic images, animation, virtual reality, interactive sequences and multi-media constructs. UBdigit is a joint project of the UB Libraries, Educational Technology Center, faculty and academic departments.

These electronic collections are largely composed of digital versions of paper documents from the Combined Arms Research Library collections.  The collections of digitized materials are uploaded in the ContentDm® Digital Collection Management System which allows for greater search and retrieval of the individual documents.  For example, you can find CGSC mmas theses and SAMS monographs here from 1998-2006.
