Creative Heritage Project: IP Guidelines for Documenting, Recording and Digitizing Inta... - 0 views

  • Digital technologies and the Internet offer unprecedented opportunities for the promotion, preservation, revitalization and protection of intangible cultural heritage, such as traditional music, art, performances, symbols and designs. Many valuable initiatives are using these new technologies to record, digitize and disseminate databases of these traditional cultural expressions. However, the digitization and wider dissemination of traditional cultural expressions can lead to their misappropriation and misuse. For example, cultural heritage safeguarding efforts have sometimes unwittingly led to the unauthorized commercial exploitation of culturally sensitive materials. As a result, indigenous organizations, museums and archives, and cultural researchers have called for guidance on which IP issues and options arise during recording and digitization initiatives. In response, the WIPO Creative Heritage Project is developing best practices and guidelines for managing IP issues when recording, digitizing and disseminating intangible cultural heritage. The project also comprises: IT assistance, in the form of technical support for the recording and digitization of traditional cultural expressions, and the establishment of digital collections and websites; and the WIPO Creative Heritage Digital Gateway, through which samples of the world's diverse traditional cultural expressions can be experienced.

Preserving Your Digital Memories - Digital Preservation (Library of Congress) - 0 views

  •
Preserving a digital object is not the same as preserving, say, a book or photograph. You can put a book on a shelf or a photo in a box and (if kept dry and safe) look at it 50 years later. The same is not true with a digital object. This is why, in many cases, digital materials are considered more fragile than physical ones.

Digitization 101: Press release: PDF should be used to preserve information for the future - 0 views

  •
This press release was received via the Digital-Preservation email list. Looking at the 27-page report, this caught my eye (p 23): PDF has become a widely used file format that is integrated into many desktop applications. Before adopting any of the PDF subset file formats, organisations must consider the alternative file formats that are available, understand their content (documents and records), and how they use electronic information. It is critical to understand the purpose of the electronic information as that will be a determining factor in choosing the file format to best suit the organisation's needs. The recommendation is not to use PDF blindly, but to use it when appropriate.

Photographing headstones is not very different from any other type of photography - 1 views

  •
Photographing headstones is not very different from any other type of photography. The basic principles of photography apply: proper lighting, exposure, focus, etc. Since we will be using digital photography for this project, it is also important to consider things like image resolution and file size. However there are a number of special tips unique to taking photographs of headstones. This guide is to help the photographer take pictures that capture accurate images ready for electronic cataloging. The information in this document is just a guideline, and a very basic one at that. The photographer may find that he or she needs to experiment with their camera to get the best picture possible.

UM Library: MLibrary Labs: Mirlyn, OAIster and Deep Blue Search Plug-Ins - 0 views

  • With these three plug-ins, you can search three specialized University of Michigan library collections: Mirlyn Search Mirlyn is the University of Michigan library catalog. There are three separate plug-ins, one each for general search, title search, and author search. OAIster Search OAIster is a union catalog of over 12 million digital resources, gathered from all over the world. This plug-in provides a keyword or phrase search of the catalog. Deep Blue Search Deep Blue provides access to the best in UM-authored scholarly and creative works. There are plug-ins for the collection as a whole and for the Ross School of Business Working Papers series. Once a plug-in is installed (see instructions, below), simply select it from the search box's menu (by clicking on the icon -- probably the Google "G" on most browsers) and selecting the search engine you wish to use. Type search terms as usual, and push the return key.
