Optical fibers cables are extremely useful and are the primary thing of the fiber-optic networks. This type of cable is generally used for a short distance. It captures the low-level light events. Fiber Optic cable has a complex design. This type of cable has an outer optical coverage that surrounds the light and traps it within a central core. The core of a multi-mode cable varies but usually, it is 50/125 or 62.5/125 microns in size. Increased core size means that light can refract at a greater rate. These probes can be used for the detection of the transient response of free ion concentrations, like calcium, potassium, sodium or magnesium. Fluorescence probes can also be designed to detect pH or membrane potential. Auto-fluorescence like the detection of ATPase activity via NADH or FAD is another application. This fiber can carry many independent channels, each using a different wavelength of light. Sensors:- i. Optical fiber is used to connect a non-fiber optic sensor to a measurement system. ii. These fibers are used as a sensor to measure strain, temperature, and pressure. Power transmission: i. It can be used to transmit power using a photovoltaic cell. ii. it is especially useful for MRI machines, which produce strong magnetic fields. Miscellaneous uses: i. used in imaging optics. ii. Light guides as medical and other applications where bright light needs.
