Abu Dhabi Arts Centre - Sculpture or Building? - 0 views

  •
In the construction and design industry, architecture is one of the most complex and multi-faceted sectors. As we have stated previously, it encompasses a whole range of broad and varying components, from mathematics to the currently trending biology. At its most basic root though, architecture deals with form. It is for this reason that architecturally designed buildings are able to become art forms as one of the industry's most artistically based facets. It only makes sense then, due to the crossover and widely varied field, that some buildings would share these sculpturally formed aspects more than others. One such building that is due for completion this year and is an example of the aforementioned form is architectural firm Zaha Hadid's Performing Arts Centre in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Bentley Announces Trial Program for Generative Design - 0 views

  •
What Experts Are Saying "KPF has been using GenerativeComponents for some time and it forms a key component in the armory of the KPF Computational Geometry Group. Several of our most advanced projects employ GenerativeComponents as a tool for exploring thousands of options as well as the complex geometry to be used in final construction, all ultimately benefiting our clients. The nature of GenerativeComponents as a MicroStation extension means that, as a matter of course, our advanced designs can be interchanged with an extraordinary variety of software." - Lars Hesselgren, Kohn Pederson Fox "At Arup, we believe firmly in the principle of integrated design and integrated approaches to design - it's the only way to design complex buildings well. That's why we use GenerativeComponents. And we are not alone. We are starting to see young people coming through the system doing things we could only have dreamed about a few years ago." - J Parrish, Arup Sport "Simplicity seeds complexity. But in the search for form we need to add reference to the representation to articulate the result. GenerativeComponents enables us to find, explore, and regulate forms more rapidly, and to transmit these forms to fabrication more economically." - Hugh Whitehead, Foster + Partners "Grimshaw's offices all share a common DNA. We are a design-driven office, and all projects are informed by the specific location, program, and environmental forces. We employ GenerativeComponents to take in and embed the multitude of inputs and structure them using this common DNA, thus enabling us to rapidly explore a variety of environmentally appropriate solutions for each design project." - Shane Burger, Grimshaw Architects "Using GenerativeComponents, we can accelerate our iteration through design options and, in parallel, assess all concepts and dismiss those that would be uneconomic to construct. As a result, we get to spend more time fine-tuning the best solution.â

A Tree Formed Tower for the Amazon - 0 views

  •
One major green belt that has seen the devastating results of deforestation is the Amazon jungle. From 1991 until 2001 the total area cleared jumped from 415,000 km2 to 587,000 km2, proving that this massive, unsustainable deforestation effort has not been just a thing of the past. In fact, it was only last year that deforestation figures slowed to their lowest numbers yet. For many in the green building industry, that is how they would like it to continue. Offering to lead this conservation effort is London-based architectural firm Marks Barfield. Who have impressed architecture and environmental communities worldwide with their £6.4m proposal for a research centre in the Amazon, which will include a central, tree-shaped observation tower and 6 miles of tree top canopy walkways. Due to the nature and function of this tower, in addition to the limitations that the rural, fragile Brazilian environment holds, a sustainable building ideology forms the foundation of the proposal.

Putting Back the Art Into Architecture - 0 views

  •
A line between art and architecture has truly never been formed. Throughout history the two different disciplines have interlinked, with the latter, for the most part, strongly reflecting, and often relying upon the former. However, functionality, building codes, economic shortages and a number of different factors can often get in the way of artistic freedom in the modern industry. In fact, many critics have argued about the displeasing aesthetics that the rise in green building is having on this industry. While that may be debatable, the relevance of art to architecture has not been forgotten. In fact, one new project has used the strategic inclusion of artistic modes throughout in order to reflect the zeitgeist of an era.

The Program Behind the Young Australian of the Year - 0 views

  •
In 2008, Marita Cheng identified a problem: too few girls in engineering, the field of her passion. Deciding to do something about it, Cheng and a number of her peers formed Robogirls, a student club which would set up and run LEGO robotics competitions for girls' schools around Melbourne, with teams receiving training and support in the lead up to the completion. What started from there has now grown into an organisation introducing girls to engineering in schools not just across Australia but also in England, Ireland, Holland and New Zealand.  Robogirls' success has now earned Marita the 2012 Young Australian of the Year.

Should Geothermal be used More in Australia? - 0 views

  •
Rather than plunder resources, however, the Romans set about using them wisely. One such resource was the hot springs to feed public baths and underfloor heating.  Back then, the result was a beautiful form of bathing on a chilly winter's day. Nowadays, the result is tourist drawcard in the English county of Somerset known all over the world as a place called Bath. Sitting in a lovely warm bath on a cold winter's day back then, few Roman citizens would have contemplated the idea that the same concept used to heat their baths - a concept now called geothermal energy - would be widely used around the world and would be considered a serious part of a solution to stop the whole world from getting too hot. Today, however, such is the reality. In 2005, according to a GeoHeat Quarterly Bulletin published by Origin Institute of Technology, a total of 73 countries around the world produced a total of 273 petajoules (PJ) of energy using geothermal techniques. With the renewed push to achieve carbon emissions reduction in Australia, some engineers believe geothermal technology should be used more widely here.

London Architecture Competition Completes Room with a View - 0 views

  •
One of London's more whimsical architecture competitions has been completed once and for all, and the much speculated 'a room for London' design concept now stands. The competition, run by Living Architecture, boasted a much lusted after brief that offered the winning design team the chance to build a room on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, to act as a temporary accommodation space throughout the 2012 Olympic Games. The incredible competition, which ran throughout 2011, picked the finalist collaboration team of architectural firm David Kohn architects and Fiona Banner with their quirky and imaginative design scheme which has seen the completion of a boat-shaped living space overlooking some of the most famous London sights. The design is a reflection of the city's strong literary roots, taking its riverboat form from Joseph Conrad's  'Heart of Darkness'.

Greenwash Conceals Sustainable Building Opus | The Earthship - 0 views

  •
In the architectural and building sectors, we have explored, promoted and dissected the fact that we are currently battling greenwash so much, that we may in fact be greenwashing the aforementioned greenwash. Indeed the term is so readily bandied about, that it no longer makes sense and is therefore responded to as a null and void sentiment. As confusing as that may seem, it holds the key to the reason that we are stuck in a vicious industry cycle that is unfortunately blocking the promotion of some incredible, and highly sustainable, built projects. Due to a confusion and misrepresentation of certain green and sustainable buildings and features, a number of these incredible designs, and their built forms, are being lost in the jungle of false green advertisement. One incredible design that, more often than not, does not receive the deserved appreciation is that of the humble Earthship.
