WGBH American Experience . Eleanor Roosevelt | PBS - 1 views

  •
This is a great article that depicts Woodrow Wilson's arrival for his inauguration in 1913 and how dismayed he was to find there was no crowd. The article gives details on the momentum of the women's movement as a group and not just certain individuals.
  •
I would say this is an article about the development of the women's movement. Eleanor Roosevelt, in her own quiet but interesting way, was quite the supporter of women's rights. While not for student reading at elementary and middle, this article provides great background info.

NY Times Voting Rights Act Invalidated by Supreme Court - 1 views

  •
I went searching for a useful article on the Shelby County v. Holder decision. I wanted to supplement the material provided in the Middle School Lesson for this week, which covered a history of voting rights in America. The materials did not go so far as to include this recent development, which arguable disenfranchised a large portion of Americans. I would read this article with the students and then add a character for "period 4" in the lesson who, students would realize, may be disenfranchised by this 2013 Supreme Court decision.

And make sure students realize the close proximity in date of this article and story. This is as current as it gets.

'We the People' Loses Appeal With People Around the World - NYTimes.com - 2 views

  •
This is an interesting NYT article that discusses America's view of the Constitution, and the impact the Constitution had on the rest of the world. It chronicles the ways other countries were impacted by the Constitution. For instance, countries that created Constitutions strikingly similar to the U.S.

Everyone should read this article! It could be the foundation for one of our online sessions. Note the remark: "America is in danger, I think, of becoming something of a legal backwater" .

  •
This has really good articles from the NYT detailing the passage of the 19th Amendment from 1919-1920. It encompasses state votes, changes that were defeated, the signing of the resolution and more. It speaks to suffrage and questions the human welfare of women.

The Oyez Project at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law | A Multimedia Archive of the Supre... - 2 views

  •
The Oyez Project is the best site available for Supreme Court decisions and business currently before the court. As I write this description, there are currently two articles about the court considering same-sex marriage issues on the front page.

"Our Broken Constitution" - 0 views

  •
An article is this week's New Yorker, By Jeffrey Toobin. He talks about problems with the Constitution and challenges conventional wisdom that it is a sacred document. This link just shows you the first page - must be a subscriber to read the whole thing. Might be worth checking it out in your school library or a new stand, though, the article seems like one I might use with my students.

Excerpt of letters from Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Morris,Henry Lee,and Henry Knox from the last years of the war to the beginnings of Constitutional Convention. The Seneca Falls Convention: The Roots Of Entitled White Feminism - 0 views

  •
The Seneca Falls Convention: The Roots Of Entitled White Feminism An easy read that is straight forward about the two organizers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott with a profile on women and feminism. An added bonus to this article is the view of Frederick Douglas. There are also various sites within the article to explore.

Articles of the Constitution - 3 views

  •
This website provides a great breakdown of the Constitution in kid-friendly language. It can be a great resource for lower achieving students who are trying to tackle the often complex language of the document.
  •
I like this site because it is so available for middle school kids. Well worth bookmarking and using.

The Douglass/Stanton Rift-"Rights vs.Rights" - 1 views

This is an article about the election of 2008. However it goes into the history of how Douglass and Stanton were close allies and then ended up not being so.

Distribution of electoral votes - 2 views

  •
This chart shows how many electoral votes each state had between 1981-90, 91-2000, and 2001-10. Could be useful when teaching contemporary elections - and could be particularly helpful when looking at demographic patterns - inferences galore to be made!

Here is a nice opinion piece by the NYT regarding the Electoral College: http://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000001821730/electoral-college-101.html?ref=electoralcollege

Albert, I loved this article and the trailer. The best quote from the trailer is the last line: Interviewer: What is democracy? Kid: It's a type of ... disease.

America's Historical Documents - 1 views

  •
This gives a sample of the most celebrated documents and milestones in history. I thought it was interesting to be able to click on a plethora of links not on just the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constittution, Bill of Rights but also links to the Emancipation Proclamation, Social Security Act, FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech and much more.

The National Archives is truly a remarkable site. Remember when we had to teach history without the richness of all the documents we can now get online?

Anatomy of the Constitution | iCivics - 1 views

  •
Although I didn't use this entire lesson, there are some excellent vocabulary and 'anatomy' of the Constitution PDFs that would work well in lower grades and perhaps with ELL students.  Good overview of the structure of government and the powers and duties of the 3 branches. I feel that there is a lot to take from this lesson to use in class.

Scaffolding the History Essay - 3 views

  •
The history coordinator for Newton (Lucia Sullivan) emailed this article to us, and I wanted to share it here with all of you. It's a great perspective on how we, as historians, must work hard to present as essays as history teachers. He talks about how to frame content, essays, and primary source evidence in a meaningful way that is accessible for all students. Given the topics brought up by this course, it seemed fairly germane.

Op-Ed "The Monster of Monticello" - 2 views

  •
Written by historian Paul Finkelman, a very opinionated takedown of Jefferson that could be used as part of a critical study of slavery and the founders. I tried to preface our look at the article with a discussion of the dangers of judging historical figures by contemporary standards, but most kids remained firmly in the "monster" camp anyway

America's Story From America's Library - 4 views

  •
This is a great American History website aimed at elementary students. They break down the articles nicely for younger readers. One thing I don't love about it is how the search works - it goes from kid friendly to something that looks more overwhelming and adult. The site is really easy to explore and perfect for beginning researchers and historians.
