I went searching for a useful article on the Shelby County v. Holder decision. I wanted to supplement the material provided in the Middle School Lesson for this week, which covered a history of voting rights in America. The materials did not go so far as to include this recent development, which arguable disenfranchised a large portion of Americans. I would read this article with the students and then add a character for "period 4" in the lesson who, students would realize, may be disenfranchised by this 2013 Supreme Court decision.

And make sure students realize the close proximity in date of this article and story. This is as current as it gets.

Wow. I came across the site when I clicked on a link in the CUNY website, and I was blown away. I am amazed that I haven't come across this website before (I bet most of you have). It's got a plethora of primary sources on revolutionary and post-revolutionary America, as well as many other eras throughout American history. It also has teaching tools and lesson plans. I think that what I like the most about it is how well organized it seems to be. I will definitely be using this!

Indeed, bookmark this site because it has just about anything you might want. It, and the archives, are the staples for US history teachers.

The prompt this week for the ACLU link had to do with how we might use timelines in class to explore voting rights, and that reminded me of this wonderful websites. It allows you to create your own dynamic timeline for students to explore, and it also allows students to create their own timelines. It's easy to use and visually very friendly.

An overhwleming topic. this page focuses on the aspect of suffrage as addressed by reconstruction and provides great background knowledge for students going into the study of the civil rights movement.

Good summary of major actions and players with links to more detailed accounts.

Dense reading. Perhaps best for teacher background.

This primary source document on the 15h Amendment speaks volumes when it states "Although ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise of the 15th Amendment would not be fully realized for almost a century. There are Historical Collection links as well.

There is a lot to improve on here - but also a lot of great essential questions. A really good starting point for someone new to the course or profession - and interesting food for thought for the veterans!

This chart shows how many electoral votes each state had between 1981-90, 91-2000, and 2001-10. Could be useful when teaching contemporary elections - and could be particularly helpful when looking at demographic patterns - inferences galore to be made!

Albert, I loved this article and the trailer. The best quote from the trailer is the last line: Interviewer: What is democracy? Kid: It's a type of ... disease.

This has really good articles from the NYT detailing the passage of the 19th Amendment from 1919-1920. It encompasses state votes, changes that were defeated, the signing of the resolution and more. It speaks to suffrage and questions the human welfare of women.

This gives a sample of the most celebrated documents and milestones in history. I thought it was interesting to be able to click on a plethora of links not on just the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constittution, Bill of Rights but also links to the Emancipation Proclamation, Social Security Act, FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech and much more.

The National Archives is truly a remarkable site. Remember when we had to teach history without the richness of all the documents we can now get online?

There has been a lot of controversy over Judge Thomas' attendance and remarks at this dinner. An interesting conversation to have with students about the idea of impartiality and how our experiences shape our choices.

This City University of New York page explores the history of Puerto Ricans in relation to US citizenship and the right to vote.

Growing Voters is a curriculum initiative project created by Lesley University Professor Jo-Anne Hart. Its purpose is to provide free ideas, activities, and tools directly for teachers to help grow in students the habit of participation and ultimately incubate pre-eligible voters.

The site offers everything from lesson plans, to primary source materials, to pedagogical approaches to teaching history, to assessment materials. This site has especially great tools for getting students to think like historians!

I love the section of "reading like A Historian".

The American Civil Liberties Union has a vast array of materials hosted on their site. Perhaps the materials of greatest use to teachers are the frequent "news releases" about issues pertaining to our individual freedoms that are currently in the news.

The is a site that teachers should bookmark and read weekly because it keeps you up to date with the issues of the day.

The Oyez Project is the best site available for Supreme Court decisions and business currently before the court. As I write this description, there are currently two articles about the court considering same-sex marriage issues on the front page.

This is the National Archives' "Charters of Freedom" website. In addition to having full transcriptions of the DOI, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, there are links to many ancillary materials as well. Included in the site are lesson suggestions, other primary source materials, and scholarly essays about the legacy of our Founding Documents.

This is a great article that depicts Woodrow Wilson's arrival for his inauguration in 1913 and how dismayed he was to find there was no crowd. The article gives details on the momentum of the women's movement as a group and not just certain individuals.

I would say this is an article about the development of the women's movement. Eleanor Roosevelt, in her own quiet but interesting way, was quite the supporter of women's rights. While not for student reading at elementary and middle, this article provides great background info.
