So, what is outsourcing and why do we do it? - grownupdigital - 0 views

IN this post over on netgened, it explains why we outsource video, how this works, and the thinking behind why we have outsourcing. This is a fundamental component of flat classroom projects, except for digiteen, which does not have a video component.

You can add subtitles to videos here . I think the point is that once something is posted, it can be "mashed up" in endless ways!

An Australian lass does some busking online to raise funds to participate in an overseas competition.
  •
Kate came up with an idea. She collected a bunch of videos of her singing and put them together on a website as a sort of "virtual busking" site. The videos were added to YouTube and embedded in the site so that viewers can watch, and a "tipjar" connected to Paypal in case anyone wants to make a donation to her trip.

Miller's "The World is Flat" Reflective Blog Post - Flat Classroom Project - 1 views

Excellent overview of Thomas Friedman's lecture at MIT which gives essential information on the history of globalization as written by a tenth grader. This is excellent writing and a nice overview of what he says in the fifty minute video. (She also embedded the video.) Excellent work. Miller also writes for Terry Freedman out of the UK, in a column called "Ask Miller" and I think her writing skills have been honed and improved as she has written for Terry as a ninth grader. She is a product also of the flat world as she has worked to write in a Google Doc for a person across the Atlantic Ocean!

Official Google Blog: Do you "Google?" - 0 views

  •
Posted by Michael Krantz, Google Blog Team Q: What do zippers, baby oil, brassieres and trampolines have in common? A: No, the answer isn't that they're all part of the setup for a highly inappropriate joke. In fact, the above list (along with thermos, cellophane, escalator, elevator, dry ice and many more) are all words that fell victim to those products' very success and, as they became more and more popular, slipped from trademarked status into common usage. Will "Google" manage to avoid this fate? This year has brought a spate of news stories about the word's addition to the Merriam-Webster and the Oxford English dictionaries, an honor that's simultaneously highly flattering and faintly unsettling. Consider, for example, this passage from a New York Times story published last May: "Jim sent a message introducing himself and asking, 'Do you want to make a movie?'" Mr. Fry recalled in a telephone interview from his home in Buda, Tex. 'So we Googled him, he passed the test, and T called him. That was in March 1996; we spent the summer coming up with the story, and we pitched it that fall.'" Now, since Larry and Sergey didn't actually launch Google until 1998, Mr. Fry's usage of 'Google' is as distressing to our trademark lawyers as it is thrilling to our marketing folks. So, lest our name go the way of the elevators and escalators of yesteryear, we thought it was time we offered this quick semantic primer. A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device that identifies a particular company's products or services. Google is a trademark identifying Google Inc. and our search technology and services. While we're pleased that so many people think of us when they think of searching the web, let's face it, we do have a brand to protect, so we'd like to make clear that you should please only use "Google" when you're actually referring to Google Inc. and our services. Here are some hopefully helpful examples. Usage: 'Google' as noun referring to, well, us.

  • Microsoft is launching new capabilities in its Lync communication platform that ties Lync and Skype together to enable audio call and Instant Messaging interoperability as well as shared presence. In addition, new hardware/software packages made with partners simplify the setup of room-based conferencing systems, Microsoft announced today at its Lync Conference 2013, the first such conference.
  • For now the Lync-Skype interoperability is just for audio calls, but Microsoft says that will be expanded to include video within a year so that a mobile phone with Skype can place a video call via Lync.
  • Microsoft is introducing a Lync room system that makes it faster and simpler to set up a conference/collaboration session in a dedicated conference room.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • The new Lync has fewer points of failure and better tools for anticipating failures, Microsoft says. The new server ensures the best available quality of service for audio and video, and it chooses the best routing path. By running more efficiently than its predecessor, Lync 2013 can support an equal number of users with fewer servers.

BBC News - Facebook 'irresponsible' over beheading videos, says PM - 0 views

This article discusses the controversy over Facebook's lack of censorship. Facebook states that its platform is a place for people to freely post, but many governments and politicians around the globe find it appalling that Facebook has not banned such videos as a woman being decapitated. Many advertisers have expressed their concern as well for they do not want to associate themselves with such content.
