The whitehouse.gov will look the same to most people except that what is behind it is part of the open source movement with the whitehouse code - now powered by Drupal -- is open source. For educators, if you've found administrators objecting to the open source movement, maybe you should consider using the white house as an example.

Open source sofware, like that used by drupal, is being used by many more organizations and gaining acceptance in governments now, like the USA with the white house.

Colleges like Yale and MIT are sharing their courses with "open courseware" - this is a very important part of sharing and how things are changing. People can literally attend colleges without paying (of course, they don't get the "credit." But this is part of building a personal learing network and how people are connecting online like never before.

Yale is joining the open bandwagon and now has some more open courses including courses on "The American Novel Since 1945" "introduction to Greek History, Civil War History, France history since 1871, Milton, physics and engineering. There are great college level resources becoming available. There are also many audio books and online podcasts here.

As part of its Open Government Initiative, the White House has just launched the ExpertNet wiki. With this wiki, the American public can help discover new and better ways to open up communication between the government and the people. Massively Open Online Courses are the discussion in Open Education -- I think the important thing is that students want to CONNECT around content - it is the relationships and connections that are so amazing more than just the content. People with a common passion are connecting through the content. The content becomes a conduit.  "Consider Stanford's experience: Last fall, 160,000 students in 190 countries enrolled in an Artificial Intelligence course taught by Mr. Thrun and Peter Norvig, a Google colleague. An additional 200 registered for the course on campus, but a few weeks into the semester, attendance at Stanford dwindled to about 30, as those who had the option of seeing their professors in person decided they preferred the online videos, with their simple views of a hand holding a pen, working through the problems. Mr. Thrun was enraptured by the scale of the course, and how it spawned its own culture, including a Facebook group, online discussions and an army of volunteer translators who made it available in 44 languages. "Having done this, I can't teach at Stanford again," he said at a digital conference in Germany in January. "I feel like there's a red pill and a blue pill, and you can take the blue pill and go back to your classroom and lecture your 20 students. But I've taken the red pill, and I've seen Wonderland."

Apple is quite protective of the uses of their devices and although they allow the development of "apps" -- they made waves recently when they denied the app that allows people to download and listen directly to podcasts w/out synching w/ the computer. Mobile itunes doesn't offer this feature. So, there is "open" and truly "open." Iphone apps store isn't really open, if this is true.

Mike McCue founded Tellme Networks in 1999 as the CEO. He joined Microsoft as the General Manager of the Tellme subsidiary after its acquisition. In 2000, Mike led Tellme to launch one of the world's first Internet platforms to deliver web data to anyone over any telephone. Starting with simple Web services, Tellme's innovative platform inspired the migration of large-scale phone services from proprietary applications to open standards applications and drove the global adoption of VoiceXML. You can look at how Google changed the world, however, you may also want to consider one other organization that has also changed things -- mozilla firefox -- consider this - what if you slightly change your topic to "How Google and Open Source Software changed the world" -- just thinking out loud here but you might want to consider it.

Matthew Bib tipped me off to this one -- this add on lets you open an IE tab in firefox. Not sure of the security of it and I want to check it out. My bank only lets me use IE. If it is safe as it look s(15 million downloads) - this is a GREAT tool.

New technology has allowed students to take MOOCs, which are massive open online courses, for college credit. However, colleges have to make sure that students taking the course away from campus and laptops are not cheating on the final exam. To do this they developed software that colleges can use to monitor students through webcams, screen sharing, and high-speed Internet connections. They can also check out their photo IDs, signatures, and typing styles.

This article explains MOOC. This is a massive open online course that allows students to choose their courses and level of participation.
