Vicki Davis (@coolcatteacher) and Julie Lindsay (@julielindsay), founders of the Flat Classroom Project, had never met face-to-face when they launched their first collaborative project several years ago. Now, they have co-authored a book, Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds to share their field-tested insights about collaborative PBL. They lead teachers from around the world on several "flat" projects annually, using technology to overcome distances and connect learners in shared inquiry and problem solving. "

Interesting project that potentially joins students across countries and cultures to discuss and create media based on 'Does my digital me reflect the real me?'

The AAS students are doing an excellent job (many of them) leaving comments on their edits, this is something that all Flat Classroom teachers should work towards. My compliments.

This is an excellent post-reflective post from a fantastic student. You can see that she drafted in a word processor and pasted it in and then embedded the videos. Knowing how to use features of various programs in tandem is part of being fluent in software. Not just can they use one program or another but can they use them together to become more efficient and effective in the task at hand.

The collection of online tools suggested here are organized into categories of instructional FUNCTIONS - many tools are able to serve in more than one role. While there are many, many more tools not listed here - the goal of this page is to give a framework for thinking about ALL the tools as providing functions in the learning, thinking and communication process.

RSS is still here. I like this RSS guide written for students at LaGuardia College. Students should know how to build an RSS reader and subscribe to things like Google news search and google scholar to build a research tool that will pull information to you on the topics of interest.

As I look back on the best of last year and am looking month by month, this blog post about Living large in lunch duty land got quite a bit of response. Each time you are around children you have time to make a difference in the life of a child. I have lunch duty next week and instead of being crabby about it, I'm going to challenge myself to live large, interact with students and make a difference. Take a reminder about lunch duty or any duty when you interact with students. 

Thinking about doing a social action global project

Google image search is being redesigned. I hope that one of the big changes that the quote below means is that we'll have more transparency with copyright. So many times, when I ask a source, students say "Google Images." No. No. No. Google images isn't a source, it is a search engine. You must quote the original source!! Hopefully this will make it easier. From Google Webmaster central... "We now display detailed information about the image (the metadata) right underneath the image in the search results, instead of redirecting users to a separate landing page. We're featuring some key information much more prominently next to the image: the title of the page hosting the image, the domain name it comes from, and the image size."

This notebook holds many forms, ideas, projects, for flattening your classroom. I like to save original documents here just in case links are broken on web sites at a later date. You can join this notebook or bookmark it to have access to the files contained here (in particular, the permissions forms.)

St. George's day is April 23 where people around the world celebrate English heritage and patriotism. For those of you who are integrating holidays from around the world as part of your global competency, this is a great lesson to study about Britain. This is a collection of lesson plans on the topic.

Might be fun to find the closest one where the students are and share these.

Some more lesson plans about africa including some interesting historical units. I also love the one titled "Africa, It's not a country" (there are even many adults that treat Africa like a country not a continent.)
