Technology in the Classroom: Helpful or Harmful? - 2 views

  •
In this article, it addresses the technology that is locked away in classrooms because it takes too much time to successfully implement them in the classroom. Technology has been proven successful in the classroom by individualizing learning for students. Technology can help the teacher track the progress of students and free up time to work on other skills (problem solving, critical thinking and social development). This article has additional resources about technology in the classroom. Janice Rose

To Blog or Not to Blog in Science and Math Class - 3 views

  •
This article is about using blogs in science and math class. David R. Wetzel offer some ideas for teachers on how to use the bogs correctly and how using blogs benefit the students. I liked the idea of posting " how to" videos on the classroom for math problems.
  •
Great article, Jennifer. So many of our math and science teachers post short videos on their websites to show students/remind students of the steps. You'll learn how to do this, also, this month.

Life in a Inquiry Driven, Technology-Embedded, Connected Classroom: Science - 2 views

  •
I love this article! After a lot of dead-end searches on technology in a science classroom, this one gives great examples of how technology is really enhancing the learning experience in a lab-based class. She tries to take advantage of everything from Livescribe to Google Jockey to Glogsters. Her examples are relevant and I look forward to shamelessly stealing her ideas.

If you are enjoying Diigo as an educator, imagine the possibilities for your classroom. You could establish a group and mark all the links you wish them to visit, direct them to certain sites for research, OR have them contribute to a community list like our CSM group. Check out this article for the "how-to's" and benefits.

Can Online Education Tackle Achievement Gap? - 2 views

  •
The Khan Academy is a leading online education tool. Founder Salman Khan started the company after tutoring his niece who was struggling with middle school math. He has written a book called 'The One World Schoolhouse' about how the traditional classroom models no longer work and that using technology in the classroom can bridge the education gaps.

Great, Megan. Khan Academy is a great way to support flipped classrooms, too.

Students Tackle Video-Game Design - 2 views

  •
Students are allowed to take on the challenge of creating video games in school. The games are created around a subject of the students interest. Students are challenged by the programming, develop critical thinking skills, and gain determination as they rise to the challenge. Students also are forced to rely on each other as their skills surpass the instructors.
  •
Interesting article, David. I love problem based learning. Video games definitely play into that design.

Audrey Watters: Mobile Phones, Educational Apps, and the Digital Divide. - 1 views

  •
Educational technology journalist, Audrey Watters, explains that although a large percentage of people have cellular devices, only a small percentage of those are smart phones. She also speaks on the digital divide of only being able to access internet on your phone and not a home computer for a small percentage of Americans. She concludes that online learning places need to be expanded for mobile devices if we wish to include everyone in the digital age.

Apple Sees Schools Buoying Tablet Lead With IPad in Class - Businessweek - 2 views

  •
It's the next greatest gadget! I'm concerned about the emphasis once again being placed on the price and the tool itself instead of how it is impacting student learning.

Online Ethics Should Begin in the Classroom - 2 views

  •
This article lobbied for instructors to teach ethical cyberspace behaviors in classrooms of all ages. It cited several schools all over the nation that have online behavior contracts and educational check marks in their curriculum regarding e-ethics. The article stated that kids have to be taught this because behavior in the e-world doesn't translate directly to behaviors in the real world.

Using Technology to Teach the Election - 1 views

  •
I have been looking for some good ideas on how to incorporate technology in the classroom to help stimulate discussion on the election. I love Mary Beth's idea of having the kids take an on-line poll where they choose which side of an issue they agree with, then learn which candidate supports that side. She also adds a couple extra sites as resources for teachers to use during this election cycle.

10 Internet Technologies that Educators Should be Informed About - 1 views

  •
I liked this article because it talked about podcasts and RSS feeds (push instead of pulling resources off the web), as well as some of the other tools. I don't always remember that in a pinch, instrucutional information videos are often available on YouTube. I also thought it was interesting that this author talked about knowing how to use social media sites ... and when not to.

Technology Adds Spark to Science Education - 1 views

  •
This video is about using technology for science education. One program is an after school program named Universe Quest that uses game building to teach girls astronomy. Another is a cyber lab that measures cell phone radiation with Geiger counters in Australia. It also includes augmented reality to find out how changing environmental laws might have impacted global warming. Th technology has allowed students to take learning into their own hands and gives them access to equipment that they otherwise would not have.

The Truth About What Motivates Us - 0 views

  •
I was inspired to share this after watching the TED Talk about Captcha. This isn't about philanthropic efforts per se but discusses what motivates people - and it isn't all about money. Scientific studies are referenced to backup the discussion and would be a great talk to share with your students as well as your peers.
