We have plenty to read in the field of education, however, reading for pleasure has lots of benefits for non-native speakers teachers and students. This is my favorite website to find all sorts of books to read for free!

Reading levels of many children's books

Although this is a "store" of quizzes for many children's books, I primarily use it when determining a book's reading level for students. Many books are in this database. It is helpful when setting up a library for elementary students, but also for a parent who is curious about a book their child may be reading...is it appropriate? too hard? too easy? When you search for a title, and it is in the database, you are given its reading level.

"In many conflicts, commanders see children as cheap, compliant, and effective fighters." I have quoted this statement since I find it extremely shocking. It is unbearable that children still undergo this type of unjustice not to mention others that are part of our reality in the 21st century. Where are the infancy defender organizations? I like to use this site for teaching kids about reading charts and graphs; side benefit is making them more aware of the world they live in.

You can also find activities to do for the earth day. This website gives you a lot of activities for your class: Vocabulary, interactive activities. Teaching our student to care about earth and using English I guess is a good idea.

This website provides extensive resources on the topic of a living wage. There is a wealth of information contained on the site, which provides comprehensive coverage of many issues surrounding the idea of a living wage and its impact on workers, communities, and businesses.One particularly interesting article discusses the impact of Walmart, not only on workers, but also on shoppers. I think the information on this site can be used in the discussion of how to balance the issue of how big retailers can contribute to communities by providing jobs and affordable goods while at the same time providing a living wage as opposed to simply low paying jobs that provide little or no benefits.

Jerry, this topic is a HOT one right now with the economy not only producing few jobs, but with people working 40 hours a week and being nowhere near meeting their financial obligations. Nice choice! M.

I've always been a supporter of Walmart - one of the few I think! If it wasn't for Walmart I'm not sure I'd be able to get by. The interesting thing though is that after reading one of the articles at the UC Berkeley labor center website, I realized that Walmart could pay more to its workers if they chose to and the impact on their profits, as well as the price increases passed along to consumers, would be minimal. The article discusses what would happen if Walmart was required to pay its workers $12 an hour and concluded even if Wamart were to pass on the entire wage increase to consumers, the increased price cost to the average shopper would only be about $12.49 a year. If Walmart offered a minimum wage of $12 an hour I can't help but believe there would be less resistance to them opening new stores in hard hit economic communities.

Family leisure activities and how it contributes to reinforce family ties are the main topics of this document. It gives you a clearer picture of your student´s environment. It is useful to know yor student background because it is not a matter to teach them English it is, also, how the students can overcome difficulties. You can use the reading to avoid sensitive points in your classes, and to know which activities children prefer to do with their parents. I always tell my students, today you are going to tell your parents what did you learn in English, many, not all, receive possitive words about it and it shows how you can use English to create an activity children can share with their parents. CDC website concentrates really useful information about health issues in different parts of the world (including my country, Peru). I've read it and found it accurate and useful for people who want to travel internationally.There are also Podcasts with great listening material.

Human Rights Watch is an independent organization dedicated to defending and protecting human rights- worldwide. They have the latest world news on various human rights issues. You can do a search by topic or world region. This site can be used to initiate class discussions via web 2.0 (or not) or to aid in research topics. It's probably most applicable for intermediate and beyond; adults and mature teens alike.

This specific page lists some environmental human rights issues. This could aid in topic ideas for further research, individually or in groups. This group- The People's Movement for Human Rights Education- includes many other human rights issues in their webpage (children, education, housing, poverty, women, etc.) worth checking out. Also the "related links" section lists many additional education, social action and UN conference links as well.
