Jigsaw the Becta Report - Exploring Web 2.0 - 1 views

  • (walled garden versus open arena)
  •
In this paragraph we might observe three things left out of Web 2.0 that in a certain moment may influence the practice and the responsibilities it may bring with them. The outline of each tension ends with suggestions for one or more researchable questions that naturally follow. With this we are only adding some particular issues that will in one way or another limit the strategic discoveries of this new technological way of communication. Further on, some limitations may impose certain morality issues that may limit any further development as well as oppose to many business negotiations that will be directly affected with this.

Hi there! It has taken too long to manage this tool. But never mind. I am very optimistic and work harder each time. This web site must be a good device for teachers who work with kids. Though you must ensure that the computers in your classroom or lab meet the requirements since the software of this web site is very trendy, I think. Enjoy it!!!

Human Rights Watch World Report 2004: Children as Weapons of War - 0 views

  •
"In many conflicts, commanders see children as cheap, compliant, and effective fighters." I have quoted this statement since I find it extremely shocking. It is unbearable that children still undergo this type of unjustice not to mention others that are part of our reality in the 21st century. Where are the infancy defender organizations? What have they done to stop this type of human holocaust? Yrma Garcia

The Teddy Stallard Story - by Mary Robinson Reynolds. This a great inspiring video I played when I gave a workshop in El Salvador 2 years ago. I like this video because it reminds me the kind of teacher I have to be for making a difference. Just click on the PLAY button and enjoy this wonderful video.

Thanks for the reminder. It is really touching. I will share it with others.

Teacher's Guide to Adoption - 0 views

  •
I am very interested in adopted and foster children. I believe every child has the human right to a safe and healthy home environment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This is a great website I found that helps teachers navigate with this sensitive human rights issue. It's a great resource for not only understanding how to approach adopted students, but also how to teach other children about the lives of those whom live with guardians that are not their parents.

This site promotes training for teachers in the field of human rights. There is a Lesson Plan related to Identity, which I think is key to starting a process of social inclusion. Eventhough I don't teach children, this lesson could be adapted for adults.

Living Wage - 1 views

  •
This website provides extensive resources on the topic of a living wage. There is a wealth of information contained on the site, which provides comprehensive coverage of many issues surrounding the idea of a living wage and its impact on workers, communities, and businesses. One particularly interesting article discusses the impact of Walmart, not only on workers, but also on shoppers. I think the information on this site can be used in the discussion of how to balance the issue of how big retailers can contribute to communities by providing jobs and affordable goods while at the same time providing a living wage as opposed to simply low paying jobs that provide little or no benefits.
  •
Jerry, this topic is a HOT one right now with the economy not only producing few jobs, but with people working 40 hours a week and being nowhere near meeting their financial obligations. Nice choice! M.
  •
I've always been a supporter of Walmart - one of the few I think! If it wasn't for Walmart I'm not sure I'd be able to get by. The interesting thing though is that after reading one of the articles at the UC Berkeley labor center website, I realized that Walmart could pay more to its workers if they chose to and the impact on their profits, as well as the price increases passed along to consumers, would be minimal. The article discusses what would happen if Walmart was required to pay its workers $12 an hour and concluded even if Wamart were to pass on the entire wage increase to consumers, the increased price cost to the average shopper would only be about $12.49 a year. If Walmart offered a minimum wage of $12 an hour I can't help but believe there would be less resistance to them opening new stores in hard hit economic communities.

I know we were told to bookmark a site referred only to the topic we chose on the map, but I found this great site that links you to a whole bunch of mterial about human rights. It inlcudes lesson plans, listening activities, interactive activities, pictures, wwebquests and a lot more. I haven't been able to go through the whole thing, but for what I've seen so far, it's very interisting and it will be of great help for some of us. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am right this moment.

Human Rights Watch World Report 2004: War in Iraq: Not a Humanitarian Intervention - 0 views

  •
This article focuses on the pretexts and justifications the US used to start the invasion of Iraq. This lead to a war that caused destruction and more poverty in the country. They called it humantitarian intervention and the Human Rights Watch said nothing.

Family health - a balance of work, play and leisure. Human Right # 24 - 0 views

This site shows something that we are losing: Values. We need to be aware that one of our duties is to reinforce family unit. We have to work not only with children but with their parents, too. You can use the information to create a comfortable environment between children and their parent. I take every opportunity to share my opinion with parents. Parents who don´t speak English I always afraid about it. With this site you can tell them that the responsibility of teaching English is yours ( their English teacher), but the responsibility to motivate their children is theirs (parents), This site can help them to prioritize their family activities, to show interest in their children activities. This specific page lists some environmental human rights issues. This could aid in topic ideas for further research, individually or in groups. This group- The People's Movement for Human Rights Education- includes many other human rights issues in their webpage (children, education, housing, poverty, women, etc.) worth checking out. Also the "related links" section lists many additional education, social action and UN conference links as well.

Spanking - 2 views

  •
This is just a wikipedia page for the term "spanking", however it provides some interesting statistics about spanking from all over the world. I'll probably have a discussion with my class and ask them to predict what kind of topics the article will cover. I'll probably give them a range of questions like, who do you think gets spanked more, boys or girls? Then I'll have them skim the article to find the answers as homework.
  •
Hi Delpha. If you are doing lessons on spanking, thought you might like this from Breaking News English-- good supplementary material! http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/0909/090928-iq.html

This is an appropiate issue related to the women's rights. One of the most terrible problems women face is Domestic Violence and it must end.

Hello Maria, I could see all the activities that can be done out of a short article. Because being an authentic material the students are led to think and talk realistically and develop all those linguistics activities. Ruth
