Lesson Plans | Amnesty International USA - 0 views

  •
This is a page on Amnesty International's website. It is full of lesson plans that explicitly teach human rights. There are two separate sections - one for elementary students and one for middle school/high school students. The elementary lessons involve games and songs. This is a great resource for classroom teachers - lessons would need to be modified for distance learners.

Film English by Kieran Donaghy features a media lesson on Human Rights and street art. This time a lesson is designed based on an award-winning video for Amnesty International by Carlos Lascano. On this section, you can find the link for the video to project in the classroom and a worksheet with activities mainly designed to generate discussion among the members of the group. The activity is intended for students in upper-intermediate level onwards. These activities will reinforce the listening and speaking skills.

Human Rights Links - International Sites - 2 views

  •
One of the most comprehensive sites on human rights around. Contains current human rights reports on most countries and articles on human rights violations worldwide. This is a really useful site for those who want to deepen their understanding of human rights issues. The site contains a lot of videos, photos, some statistics and testimonies. Without doubt teachers can offer their students to work together on a project "Human Rights" in order to raise their awareness of the issue. In addition, teachers can use the site to teach university students how to analyze and synthesize material.

"Human Rights Watch defends the rights of people worldwide." Students can investigate, on this site, about abuses happening worldwide and use the information for a debate in the classroom. They can also try to find a solution for a specific problem like they wold at the UN. Another idea would be to write reports or compare what's going on in a specific place around the world with their own reality.

I find this source quite interesting and diverse so I think that I as well as any other teacher of English from any place of the planet can use this material in designing their own lessons on human rights or use them as they are. Hope you will also find them useful.

Attacking Education a War Tactic Globally, Study Shows | Human Rights Watch - 1 views

  •
This bookmark is from the website called Human Rights Watch. The education has been under attack in conflicts. The article says students, teachers and schools are often targeted and used as a war tactic because of their connection to education. The video is an example of those tragedies. A girl who just believed everybody has a right to access to education was shot. World organizations are providing information and trying to protect education. I think this article can be used as an example of why preserving education is very important in some countries. Students can read and watch the video as an example, then teacher can ask them to find other articles on the website that are related to education as a human right.

One of the tricks to learning any language is to act it. The spoken word is only one part of all communication. If you have a dog and it comes to you to tell you that it's hungry, or in pain, what language does it use?

FAQ: What You Need to Know About the NSA's Surveillance Programs - ProPublica - 0 views

  •
This site goes over the general facts about NSA surveillance programs. It describes the basic metadata that is collected for US phone calls:"the telephone number of the phones making and receiving the call, and how long the call lasted." It mentions the NSA program PRISM which collects emails, instant messages, and both private and public facebook data. It also mentions the program XKEYSCORE which gathers massive amounts of data from internet traffic. This FAQ also mentions what sort of things can be revealed by metadata and why critics of these programs find them alarming and illegal. This is a great article that covers the basic issues and concerns associated with NSA and mass surveillance. You could have students read it as a way to prep them for a project or discussion on this topic.

Difference between 'individual rights' and 'privileges' - 0 views

  • The United Nations is a system of privileges without individual rights. The United Nations’ “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” should be called the “Universal Declaration of Human Privileges.” Every “human right” is a privilege owned by the United Nations. Article 29 states, “These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.”
  • Modem-day totalitarian systems
  • are collectivist systems of privileges without individual rights. Everything, including all life, is considered a “special privilege” owned by government.

  • There would be no protection from a government with unlimited power to distribute, modify and rescind privileges.
  • ing Fathers recognized that if citizens believed individual rights came from government (not from our creator), then our rights would become a worthless “special privilege,”
  •
This article was fascinating to me because it seems a great commentary on what is a "right" and what is a "Privilege." I feel in the USA the difference between these two are not understood. This writer does a good job of explaining how to define each and who holds the power of each.

The site promotes the innovative and creative use of film in English language teaching and learning. All of the lesson plans revolve around the use of video and film to teach English. The site promotes cineliteracy, the ability to analyse moving images, and considers cineliteracy as a 21st century skill which our students need to learn. In addition, the lessons promote critical thinking in the language classroom, and  encourage learners to reflect on values while learning a  language. PrintFilm English has become a very popular resource English Teaching bank and is visited by over 80,000  teachers every month and there are over 2.5 million page views a year.
