We often think of voting demographics in terms of "minorities," which makes groups of "white voters" an invisible norm. This article asks the question of why white people are proportionally voting for Romney.

It's amazing how your race affects you as soon as you are born. Here is a good article about adoption cost and why it costs more to adopt a white baby. 

This is horrifying and would make a great research topic. I've seen a lot of things teaching this class, but never something like this.

A white male and female are attacked by a group of black men. I find the actions surrounding this interesting. One of them is how the newspaper employer of the two attacked didn't publish the story till 2 weeks later.

I am interested in this story as well. The definition of a "Hate Crime" is hotly debated. I was origionally invented to protect minorities who were persecuted, so the idea that the majority (white people) could be vitctim to it does not necessarily fall withing its boundaries. O'Reilley does some interesting things rhetorically here. He makes a lot of assumptions and inferences but does not provide facts. He assumes he is talking to an audience who agrees with him. He implies people of color get special treatment and white people are victims of this under the guise of saying everyone should get equal treatment. He fails to note that people of color do not receive equal treatment under the law. This is a crucial difference between positions on the political spectrum. I think what is most appealing about O'Reilley's rhetoric is that he says he just wants justice for everyone. A great article to talk about!! Thanks for the post Katelynn.

I really like this article for all the different issues it brings up and how it connects to another case that went viral about a year or so ago. This is the case of Henry Louis Gates Jr (who, by the way, edits The Root, which I suggested you add to your news feeds. He is a famous (black) scholar and porfessor at Harvard Univeristy. He locked himself out of his house and had to break into it. He was arrested doing so and the (white) policeman did not allow him to retireve identification. Long story short, the policeman treated him like a criminal, the professor got indignant and things went from bad to worse. This incident went viral and was seen as a clasic case of racial profiling. It got so heated that the President of the United States had to bring Professor Gates and the Policeman to the White House to resolve the dispute over "a beer." Try interchanging races on this one--Would it end up at the White House? Anyway, This article compares what happened to Professor Gates to what happened to Trayvon Martin. Very interesting analysis. A comic that explores how people in our society often react differently to young white women and young black women

I work down by Madison where its pretty diverse at a grocery store and I see this happen all the time when consumers come through my line vs. coming through a fellow Latina or African American or Asian cashiers line. The conversations that customers have with cashiers of different race are suprizingly different and can be quite offensive.

It was hugely insensitve and racially demeaning. They thought it was funny. Stereotypes were the joke of the party. You don't see people of color holding parties mocking the way white people live. The site a posted is just one story about this. And this is but one instance of what is a disturbing trend.

Now here is a case where the school needs some diversity training!! Can you imagine sending a white girl home for wearing white tights! So complicated.

Jadyn, This is an excellent article that hits on so many issues having to do with race. Who gets to be "white," how do we define "white," does the color of the individuals involved in an altercation/homocide affect who is guilty or innocent? If you haven't chosen an article yet, I'd take a serious look at this one. I'd like to come back to this one for discussion or use it for the next section. Great job posting a complex article.

This is frightening. We might try a search for coming race war. I don't even like to think there is a segment of the population out there who is actively preparing to wage this war. Definitely something to read/research more about.

BEIJING -- The online version of China's Communist Party newspaper has hailed a report by The Onion naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" - not realizing it is satire. I thought this was really funny and wanted to share!

This also shows a real lack of rhetorical and cultural awareness. The fact that the readers of this can't detect satire is a sure sign that they are not reading this article within a cultural context and don't understand its irony. Similarly Iran's media ran a story about how the average, white, rural American would rather vote for their leader than Barak Obama because Iran's leader took "diplomacy and foreign affairs seriously." This too was taken from a satire done by The Onion.

Oops, Disney does it again...Check this out. This princess looks like many of the other "white" princesses Disney has produced. Note the skin color and blue eyes. I can see why there has been backlash by the Hispanic community.

I remember watching 2 of these episodes in Psychology Class, I couldn't find any episodes on YouTube, but if we could watch one; it would be extremely eye opening

This story/video doesn't pertain to the Trayvon Martin case but I found it very interesting because it just goes to show that people of the African American race are followed more closely than those of the White race just like McIntosh described in her article. I feel that we could make some big connections between this case and the Trayvon Martin case along with racism throughout the world.

I like this because there is a scientific study behind it. There are some people who say blacks are obese because all they do is eat fried chicken and do nothing all day, this proves that there is a scientific reason behind some of the obesity differences in different races

I'm not sure who these "some people" are, but it is a sad stereotype for people to propegate or believe in. Yes, different groups of people are predisposed to different illnesses. Oftentimes this has to do with access to resources and stress. The video I referenced earlier "Unnatural Causes" is a good case of this. Black people in this the US vs. other 1st world countries die on average 10 years sooner than their whiter counterparts. This is actually attributed to the stress they feel from society and racism. We can also refer to many other studies from the video regarding class and people of color.
