This article is the description of the first Futurist artist in America and how Futurism changed when it came over from Italy. It is mostly an analysis of "the first American futurist", Joseph Stella, and a "futurist composer", Edgar Varese. The author also compares these American futurists with the founding Italian futurist, Filippo Marinetti.

This article is about the arrival and spread of Italian Futurist ideas throughout the New York City culture in the early 20th century. It goes into detail the lives of the first American Futurist painter, Joseph Stella and a composer by the name of Edgard Varèse. In the article, the lives of these two artists are analyzed from the perspective of the work that they created. Through their works a friendship was made. Through this friendship and contribution to the art community Futurism grew through New York.

Van Gogh is an impressionist and has the talent of using line and shapes in order to evoke an emotional response. Van Gogh was interested in ideas rather than images, which inspired many of his pieces of work. The history of his life is shown and describes who he is and his work. In the beginning of his life Gogh did not know he wanted to be an artist, but later traveled and studied art.

In this article it explains the life of Van Gogh. It turns out he had health problems and did not take care of himself. Van Gogh did not eat at times, drank excessively, and smoked. His bipolar mood greatly influenced his paintings. Throughout his life he wrote letter to his brother, which today are translated. The letters are considered to be real literature and inform the reader about his life.

Paul, Bergin.  "Andy Warhol: The Artist as Machine".  Art Bulletin, vol. 26, No. 4 (1967): 359-363. Print. This book discusses the complexities behind Andy Warhol's character.  It discusses how Warhol has managed to keep his personal life out of the media and therefore remains much a mystery to the public.  People are left to interpret his personality through his artwork.  Warhol is often associated with the Campbell's soup can, and paintings of automobile accidents.  

Montagu, Jemima. The Surrealists: Revolutionaries in Art & Writing 1919-35. London: Tate Publishing, 2002. Print. The developments of surrealism can be seen in Montagu's book. She goes through the age of surrealism and identifies all of the changes in the movement. She also lists the artists that helped influence the changes in the movement. the book goes through the year chronologically so it is easy to put in perspective. This is a good source because the author puts specific dates on the changes in Surrealist art.

Shanes, Eric. "The Pop Art Tradition: Responding to Mass Culture." Parkstone Press International (2006): Ohiolink. Web. 16 Nov. 2010. Shanes traces the roots of popular mass culture in the late 18th century when the industrial and political revolutions industrialized the Western World. Pop Art is said to have originated from Surrealism in Britain when Eduardo Paolozzi, Peter Blake, and Richard Hamilton began exploring comic books, advertising, and folk culture. Artist, Claes Oldenberg, began works of art that connected to "store exhibitions," which filled galleries with common American objects. This emphasized and worshiped consumer goods.

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1928. He received his art training at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Institute of Technology and went on to become a commercial illustrator in NYC in the 50's. Warhol had his mind set on becoming a solo artist all throughout his career. His first solo exhibit was in 1962, where his 32 Campbell Soup can paintings were displayed.

This article describes the craziness that Dali was famous for. It explains the texts that were taken to assess his mental state and his overall diagnosis. This is discovered through his art, autobiography, and interviews with those who were close to him throughout his life.

Surrealism is one of the main modern art movements in the twentieth century. Expressionism, Futurism, Impressionism, minimalist, Op Art, Post impressionism, Fauvism, and other Abstract art movements have all been a part of shaping Surrealism. It is the combination of all art movements and theories that influences art today. Surrealism is known to clarify images of life as the artist sees it. It does not limit or restrict any immoral interpretations of life, but rather expresses it in an open-minded way. Surrealism expresses all irrational thoughts and makes the art lively and thrilling. It tends to raise disordered thoughts or questions, but it is meant to express fantasies, mysteries, and illusions as a temporary reality.

This article includes a brie history includint where Art Deco got its name, some founding designers and the previous artistic movements that founded Art Deco. There is a focus on the cost of an original Art Deco piece today- it could be anywhere up to 3 million dollars. The prices are so high due to the unique materials the art was made out of. The article mentions specific examples of major Art Deco art including the Chrysler Building. There is also mention of how Art Deco is in effect today as well as examplesof current designers.

It tells you the origin of where the name impreesionism came from and all about the subjects the artists paints about and the techniques they use. In addition, the site lists "the masters" of the art movement and the numerous paintings they painted. Lastly, it gives a list of a few books about the art movement and of the artists.

In this article it talks about Van Gogh's failure as an artist while he was alive. Van Gogh produced over 1800 pieces of work, and only sold one painting while he was alive. Van Gogh tried to find himself through his artwork. His life was very bleak and depressing. In the end Van Gogh ended up committing suicide, which was not found to be too surprising.

This is a Description of Andy's works and how his art topics relate to mass produced items in the US, like soup and Hershey bars. His art work reflects the population of America and civilized cultures around the world. Most of his art pieces are Pop Art genre. Many of his pieces reflect American culture/society.

This article talks generalizes the music popular in the 1960s. The article references artists that made an impact on American music during a time of civil strife including: The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin. The author notes that the Beatles defied the concept of what rock and roll should have been. There wasn't much to say about the Beatles but that they had a diverse sound that not many have heard before.

This article explains the characteristics of Art Deco as well as briefly describes the movement leading up to it. There are several Art Deco artists named with a short description o their work. This article is a great place to start Art Deco research because it has a large amount of basic information and is therefore a great jumping off point.\n\n

This is an article by Gertrude Stein talking about Picasso. I really like this article because it outlines Picasso's mindset compared to other artists such as Matisse. It even gives some philosophical references. This article is a great tool for understanding his techniques. The most valuable part of this article is the explaination of Picasso's techniques.
