In Britain, a new austerity budget has threatened massive library closures across the country, with some communities in danger of ending up with no public library at all. Philip Pullman's local chief counsellor accused authors of defending libraries because they like the royalties they earn from the books libraries buy. In response, Pullman has given this stirring speech about the value of libraries to their communities and to civilization

Something I mentioned to everybody in the class I led discussion during and something I'd meant to share a link to weeks ago, but something that's hyper-relevant, given the topic of today's reading and our latest title, "I live in the future & here's how it works." Enjoy!

An article I read last week that made me think of the class. Particularly interesting was the Editor's defense: " 'Americans don't read our paper because they can't read Spanish. They don't read our news, our editorials and the opinion of the community. But if they see a picture, they'll get it,' he said."

The Pope talks about how Christianity and new ways of communicating come together in the "Digital Age" we now live in.
