Several states are considering passing laws like a bill that was recently passed in Tennessee outlawing parts of Islamic Shariah law. Shariah law is an Islamic way of settling disputes while taking religious tenets into account. Supporters of the bill feel that allowing the practice of Shariah law within the United States will denigrate the Judeo-Christian foundation of the U.S., however protesters argue that creating such laws will erode the very foundation of American democracy and freedom of religion.

The legal status of women in the modern Middle East has been in transition since the early part of the twentieth century. Customary laws, Islamic laws, imported European laws, and reformed versions of Islamic laws affect women in" Varying degrees in the different Middle Eastern legal systems, and the status of women does not seem to have been settled in any of them.

France started a ban on Islamic face veils worn by women supporting and practicing their religion. The law infringes on their personal freedoms and many have protested outright.
