Death with Dignity Introduced in the Massachusetts State House - Death with Dignity Nat... - 0 views

  •
Dignity 2012 cleared the biggest hurdle in the process at the end of 2011, gathering 84,713 signatures, of which 79,626 were qualified and certified. All initiatives in the Commonwealth originate in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for their journey through the State House. The initiative was introduced as H.3884 and assigned to the Joint Committee on the Judiciary. Over the next few months, legislators will discuss the initiative and consider one of the following steps: The General Court can pass the initiative as it's written. (This rarely happens.) The Judiciary Committee can make a formal recommendation of Support, Do Not Support, or Neutral. The Legislature can put its own version of the initiative on the ballot. (Again, this is rare.) If the legislature doesn't pass the initiative as it's written, the next step for Dignity 2012 will be another phase of signature gathering in the beginning of May. This next signature gathering phase would be smaller than the one which took place in the fall; the campaign would need to collect 11,485 qualified voter signatures between the beginning of May and July 3rd to be considered for the November ballot. Voters who signed the petition during the first signature gathering phase cannot sign the second petition.

The Ethics of In Vitro Fertilization - 0 views

  •
My conception of ethically permissible behavior is based on the view that any decision is ethically permitted if it is voluntary and does not cause gratuitous harm to others. This is congruent with the early ethical stricture in medicine, Primum non nocere, "First, do no harm." However, our perception of harm must be qualified. A living being can be harmed without being harmed in a moral sense. I harm a mosquito when I swat it, but I do not harm it in a moral sense unless I assign a moral absolute value to the mosquito's well-being. To be harmed in a moral sense is to be wronged. Thus, my concern is with behavior that does or does not wrong another.

Should 18 year old people be allowed to buy alcohol? They can vote on leaders and shoot people in war so why not make the decision to drink?

The Crusades - 0 views

this page explaines how christians pillaged and took turkish held jerusalem in the name of god. this inccident and several similar inccidents shortly after were known as the crusades. i wanted to show this article to the class because it shows how christian extremists killed innocent people in the name of god and how even in the distant past they were people who believed it was ok to kill thousands of people in the name of their god
  •
i figured this article would be a stretch for the assignment but i believe that the crusades are a major example of the violation of religious freedoms and how religious extremism can do extensive harm reguardless what religion the extremists believe in

If Bill AB2019 is enacted into law, it will become mandatory to vaccinate children even when if the mom or dad says otherwise.

This is one of those issues that I have trouble keeping cool about. It once again shows me how other people want to take over raising the children from the parents. I have chosen it vaccinate my children but if other parents chose not to I feel that is their choice as parents.
  •
I think it shouldn't be mandatory for parents to vaccinate their children. Every parent has their beliefs and doubts when it comes to medications.
  •
I understand that children's health is at risk but most parents accept vaccinations for their children. This means that a majority of the population has protection against these diseases and an outbreak is unlikely to happen even for those children who are not vaccinated. Ultimately, it should be the parents' decision whether or not they want vaccinations for their children.
  •
a parent should always have a say in what medically happens to their child. what if they are allergic to the vaccine or other issues
  •
I think it is absurd and over steps the bounds of a parents decision in proper rearing of a child. I myself had no vaccinations up until I worked for a hospital before I was 20. At that point it was mandatory that I have the injections or find another place of employment. It was my choice then and I do appreciate my parents leaving it up to me to decide what is put into my body. With all the recent cross contamination's and impure batches I can understand the concern of giving a small child these shots.

I think agree with destini, if we have talking about personal freedoms in all of these assignment then the individual should get to choose what they want to do. If a parent does it for them, then it was never a choice in the first place.

Young children can not make the decision themselves. That right is the given the parents that conceived them.
