There's other resources As well that can help you find your legislators, find out about federal and state legislation, and get connected to legislative advocacy initiatives in your state. Participating in the legislative process is a really important way that APRNs can advocate for our patients, and this resource will support you in engaging with it.

This article chronicles the history of nursing and how expanding the role of nurses was initially justified. It discusses how this expanded role eventually became the role of the nurse practitioner that we are familiar with today.

I found this article to be completely fascinating as I was almost completely unaware of the history of the APRN role. I have heard of Lillian Wald and Mary Breckenridge but didn't know the full extent of their backgrounds. I enjoyed the history provided in this article and feel that it was a perfect reading to begin my APRN transition. It provided some important information on how the role of the nurse changed and was diminished by ourselves (ANA) before being re-expanded in the 1960s with the role of the NP. I'd love to hear what others think and if you have other interesting historical articles on the background of the APRN role!

This article is about scope of practice and gives a state by state analysis of regulations and how the 2008 consensus applies.

This article details the researchers' efforts to describe the ability of nurse practitioners to reduce health disparities. By reviewing the literature, the researchers were able to create a "Nurse Practitioner Health Disparities Model" that outlines the many factors that influence a NP's ability to reduce health disparities. Outside actors, such as policymakers and insurance companies, can also influence the ability of nurse practitioners to reduce health disparities. Thus, the model is a useful tool in promoting full practice for APRNs.

Diverse regulatory criteria, such as variable accreditation standards, disparate certification and licensing requirements, inconsistent population foci, and scopes of practice, represent barriers to optimized APRN function within today's complex healthcare system and, ultimately, reduced access to safe, quality care for patients. The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation promises to unify APRN education, practice, and licensure, promoting greater mobility among nursing professionals. Elimination of inconsistencies in APRN licensure, education, certification, and accreditation requirements will promote greater value and mobility for the APRN within the healthcare system. This article explores how APRNs in the state of Iowa, as part of a state-sanctioned task force, identified barriers to practicing at the top of their licensure. Four goals to remove barriers to APRN full-scope practice were identified: 1) Create documents describing APRN roles to educate stakeholders, 2) Initiate discussion and presentations regarding APRN practice with stakeholders, 3) Form guidelines to create change in the existing institutional bylaws, and 4) Disseminate information using common language to the public using social media.

This article provides a brief history of the APRN role and the advancement from a CRNA, to midwives, then to FNPs. The focus is the family nurse practitioner role. The author shows the connection with Erik Ericsson's stages of development and provides examples of how the role of the NP progressed through those stages. Examples are also provided from a world development perspective, as each country has also had to move through the same phases of development before moving on to the next. The author concludes that we (the U.S.) are still in the final stage of development (Integrity-older adult).

This is an interesting article with many varied references, discussing the history of midwifery throughout the world and since the dawn of human civilization. The authors state their interest in identifying the "macro" and "micro" socio-cultural factors that have shaped the development of the midwifery profession, focusing on the concept of "care" and on midwifery as the world's first holistic profession.

ABSTRACT: Today, neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) practice in a variety of settings. Tertiary and secondary nurseries are still the largest employer of NNPs. Follow-up clinics and home care agencies employ NNPs as well. In each of these arenas a performance evaluation is necessary.

Faced with a shortage of primary care doctors, more and more clinics are relying on nurse practitioners to fill the gap. But that creates another gap, in the level of training providers bring to the job. Residency programs--once reserved for physicians--are popping up for nurse practitioners as well.

Hello Everyone, Module 3 instruction asked us to explore articles about our transition from student to APRN. as we discussed in class and from guest panel, I realized that mentorship is really important. While I was looking through emory DiscoverE about mentorship, I came across this article that highlights how important it is to clarify the term "mentorship" when I am talking to my potential employer because it can mean different for the employer. The article really highlights how important it is to find a set definition for the term "mentorship". If the link does not work, I have the article downloaded, but I cannot seem to attach it here.

A story of a new NP graduate finding a NP job very soon after graduation

Very interesting read. This article provides evidence on why healthcare organizations should hire nurse practitioners based upon the education and training that they receive within their speciality as opposed to their previous RN experience. Many hospitals are struggling with this dilemma: Do we hire the APRN who has previous nursing experience in this area (who is not certified in this area) or do we hire the APRN who is certified to work in this area based on their formal training/education but is a new graduate? This article describes how prior nursing experience with a specific population does not qualify a nurse practitioner to practice without the population-focused education and certificate.
