I can import my highlighted passages from Kindle reading to Diigo? SOLD! I've felt limited by kindle reading/highlighting because then my notes are still stuck on the kindle. But with this integration ... oh my, the possibilities!

    I liked reading the comments. I didn't notice changes, so presumably they didn't remove anything that I use! They said they would remove a discover feature (helping newcomers search for content/groups?). That's OK with me. Interesting in the comments was some discussion of individual workflows with Diigo and other tools (Pocket, IFTTT, InoReader, OneTab).

    Interesting piece. I've heard lots about the debate over scholarship versus service, and thought that Bessette's analogy to blogging as service was fascinating. Knowledge sharing may not be scholarship in the traditional sense, but it certainly plays an important role in pushing higher education forward, so maybe it should be considered a real part of a scholar's contributions to the field.

    I know some bloggers who are actively lobbying to consider their blogs as scholarship. Some have submitted archives as part of promotion dossiers. Generally, they're not at R1 universities -- although there are plenty of R1 scholars who see how blogging and other social media interactions can enhance their scholarship via promoting their work and building their networks. And many have also talked about the effect it has had on their writing. I think I'll blog about that sometime in the next week.

    author: George Ligon IV I recently read an article about a study on college students use of Youtube to support academic learning. According to Alexa (2015), Youtube is the third most visited website in the world (as cited by Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018). The study explored students' usage and their perceptions of Youtube's effectiveness as an academic learning tool. Out of 312 respondents 71% stated they used Youtube for academic learning purposes (Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018). According to Moghavvemi et al. (2018), 76% of respondents stated they used Youtube to learn how to solve problems, 77% used it to answer questions, and 83% used it to watch videos that were suggested by friends. In addition to this, Moghavvemi et al. (2018), reported 70.5% of respondents believed they learned more from watching Youtube than reading a book. Thus, the findings supported previous studies which found using videos to teach was an effective tool to enhance academic performance (Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018).     As I see the word 'categorizing' I just wanted to read the article. The author states that expert ICT teachers engage in social media activities in different ways based on their conceptualization of 'professional learning.' I think this article requires careful, slow reading. It is a little bit intense for me! :-)

    While reading an article this week, I was stuck on trying to grasp what Ontology was. After looking at several search results, images, and videos, this is the one that has helped the most - maybe all the rest I saw now makes sense seeing this?

    I was confused at first, too, because although I am familiar with this concept in philosophy, it didn't seem to fit what was being described in the articles. This video was helpful-thank you!

    This is a great tool to enhance interaction in the online classroom. It allows the creation of avatars with the addition of voice so you can interact with your students in ways that capture attention, motivate interaction and helps explain concepts to key audiences from varying perspectives.

    Wow, I really like this tool, seems like Voki could improve all kinds of classes, especially foreign language or reading classes for students that may get nervous speaking aloud. Is there a tool on the teacher's side though that prints out a report of the scores on the oral tests that the students spoke of? Just curious....thanks. (O:

    Reddit is quite popular, though many people don't connect with it. It has a devoted user base that is often less friendly to outsiders. I think this is part of the appeal for people that do use it. Here is something that I think is accessible for others. The AMA's (Ask me Anything) can be really interesting. Matt Damon has some really interesting answers that go beyond stand surface-level answers. The comments based on his answers are part of the fun of reading it. For anyone who checked out Reddit and didn't care for it, I think this a good for giving a taste of what reddit can be.

    After checking out Vanessa's post on Creative Commons, I googled the title of this post and found an easy to read article that sheds some light as to the power of our tools and providing Open Education. There is mention of C.C. as I think the two are interlinked. When I see stuff like this, it gives me hope that we're moving in the right direction (maybe taking a side step or two along the way).

    I have checked out Moodle before and have read articles that seems to favor this over Blackboard. However, even though its free, it may be a challenge for some universities to switch over. The hidden costs are high.

    I used Moodle for several years at my former school, in Spain. It's a great LMS, not too different from Blackboard. It's free but, at a school level you still have to have an IT department for the maintenance, or pay an external administrator. If I were a principal, I would choose Moodle over Blackboard.
