This brief article is an early work by Dr. Ian Bogost related to what he would later refer to as "procedural rhetoric." In this piece Dr. Bogost draws parallels between various processes essential to being "literate" at different points in history. With what "processes" do we need to become literate as educators in the 21st century? How can we help others become literate?

This sounds a lot like learning by doing. If students can't experience battle re-enactments, or visit musuems and historical sites, or travel to parks, or act out a story, technology might afford those luxuries. Computers, iPads, even smart phones can provide virtual field trips and experiences. Students can further share these experiences through social networking. As an older generation, I feel it necessary to keep learning how today's youth are communicating so I will be able to connect with them and bridge that gap in their education.

Not a fan of Diamond, but I did like Guns, Germs, and Steel. As it relates to learning, I do agree that there is great benefit in constructing your learning. I imagine a day when we will be able to choose from a vast assortment of resources that will allow us to illustrate specific terms or concepts and from those resources we can build knowledge, sort of like a Lego model.

Wiffiti is a free interactive messaging site that you can use with students. It is one of the sites recommended to use with lessons using cell phones. The student can summarize their reading assignments and text them to the site. Using a projector you can show the summaries to the class.

This is a free on line learning program. Students can practice math and reading. Teachers can keep track of students progress, communicate with students on the program and provide homework Parents can also monitor students progress and communicate with the teacher.

Nanoogo is an online e-portfolio. On this site students can create and share their ideas . This is a digital canvas that the students can share with classmates and parents. Parents can comment on students work. The site is currently free. It is recommended to sign on soon because they are considering charging a fee.

InfuseLearning is a breakthrough virtual learner response solution. You can create an environment in which students can read, listen, and participate in their native language Get real-time, student feedback. InfuseLearning isn't limited by device or location. This is a great website for digital storytelling. Students can create their own digital stories, animations, pictures and more. Students will need a sign in, and as a teacher you can create class accounts.

A creative website where students can make artwork, an animated movie, cards, and a drawing. Students can also vote on movies, stories, and drawings that other people have made.

Great website for K-6 Educators for enrichment and supplemental materials for Science and Social Studies. Students can use the site to explore information that is formatted in a fun and easy-to-read way. Or, they can use the site to play games, take quizzes, look at photos and maps, look up crafts and recipes, enter contests, and more. Teachers can use the site to project on an interactive whiteboard for quizzes and whole-class games. I like the site because it is culturally-rich and informative, yet kid-friendly.

This is a very well, designed and user friendly classroom blogging tool. I have been using it with my fifth graders and it is working very well. I can review all of the content before allowing it to be posted. I can make comments and mark errors and re-submit it to the student to be corrected. I can even pull up a blog as an example and edit it in front of the class without telling them whose blog it is. Pretty cool :-)

Today's tutoring programs are redefining learning by telling teachers what students need, when they need it. 

I have used this website in Kindergarten and am excited to see that there are plenty of resources I can use for second grade. The NCTE is composed off dedicated teachers who share their resources, strategies, and best practices with others. You can enjoy the benefits of being a NCTE member by enrolling in the membership. Many of the resources are free and can be used in the classroom. There are lesson plans and student interactives to use for any subject on a computer or smart board. The great thing about this website is that parents and children can access it at home for after school resources. There is community involvement and professional developments that one can attend.
